Steven Hnthaway, Lead of the firm
ot llathnwny & Co.. Importers, desired
that his son, aged seventeen, should
succeed him in his business. Wishing,
however, that ho should be properly
educated, he seut the boy to college.
Before he left the father said to hi in: !
"Ren, since you are to take my plneo
in the business, I wish you to choose
elective studies that will be of benefit
to you In mercantile pursuits, such as
political economy and kindred subject. I
Since your Ufa will be devoted to peace-!
ful work I trust you will not spend
much time on athletics. You will have
no opportunity In business to display
your muscle."
Ben went to college; but, having more !
taste for games thau books, he gradu-1
ated at the foot of his class In studies ,
and at the head In athletics. He was '
celebrated In his time as right tneUle
in the football games and on several
occasions turned an ignominious defeat
Into a brilliant victory. When lie went
home his father was by no means'
pleased with his son's record, but made
the most of what lie eousUleriKl a fail
ure and turned the boy Into his count
ing room.
It was not long after this that the
financial panic of 1007 came on, ami
every one was scrambling for ready
cash to meet his obligations. Steven
Hathaway exerted every means to keep
the firm on Its feet, but It was a long
pull and a hard pull, and before the
finish the old man was well nigh ex-1
nausieo.
One day Ethan Bull of tho firm of
Lyon & Bull came Into tho ofhee of
Hathaway & Co. and demanded pay
ment of $10,000 due his firm. When
Mr. Hathaway senior begged for time.
Bull stormed and blustered, threatening
to put the Arm Into bankruptcy If the
money was not pnld within twenty
four hours. He left, saying that he
would call the neit day before bank
closing and that If he did not receive
a check for the whole amount he
would execute his threat.
That night the bead of the house of
Hathaway & Co. went home physic
ally and mentally In collapse. Ben
went with him, put him to bed. sent
for a doctor, and when he came nsked
him to forbid the invalid to go back to
his ortlce for several weeks at least.
The doctor complied, and Ben breathed
easier.
The next morning Ben wnlked Into
the offlee and announced that he would
All his father's place as ninnngcr. This
did not lessen the dread with which
tlie oflice force looked upon the situ
ation, for the young man had never
mnnnged any business, certainly not
In such trying times. It happened to
be the worst day of the money squeeze.
One hundred nnd fifty per cent was
bid for money, and none to be had.
About 2 o'clock, when securities on
the stock market were crumbling and
ruin stared everybody but tramps and
beggars In the face, Mr. Bull wnlked
Into the counting voom.
He stood six feef one. weighed 200
pounds and had a neck like his name
sake. Ben knew well enough Hint Ills
object hud been nnd was to frighten
his father Into straining every nerve to
raise the means with which to pay his
uccnr.nt. The expression of the cred
itor's face was like that on Japanese
Images of their god of war.
"Where's Mr llnthinvay?" ho asked
In stentorian tones. . ,
"I'm Mr. llathnwny." said Ben. ris
ing from his father's desk and ad
vancing, with a pleasant smile. "1 snp
puse you have called, Mr. Bull, for
your account. I regret that owing to
the locking up"
"I want my money." roared Bull,
"nnd If I don't get It I'll pull this house
down on jour heads."
Before tjie last word was out Ben
had tackled him. and In nn Instant he
was on the dour.
"One down!" said Ben.
Bull got up and. with redhot blood In i
his eyes, went for his assailant. In an- i
other moment he had resumed bis 1
place on the Hour. Tills thin- his fall
was aggravated by Ben's railing witli
all his weight on top of him. j
"Two downs:" cried 1 1 itt Im way Jun
ior, disengaging himself and Jumping
up. I
Mr. Bull took more time llmi before i
to get up. but when on bis feet made a '

Ben been there, would have hurt him. I
Without walling for n second drlv j
Ben gave his enemy his list ami landed
him again on the floor. Then, Jumping j

"Three downs!" he said. I
Ills enemy made a few feeble nt-,
tempts to rise, then lay still. I
"See here, Mr. Bull." said Ben. "If
you'll promise to leave this olllcc peace
ably I'll let you up." !
"Yes, I'll leave this office." punted the
prostrate man. "anil I'll go straight to
