Walla Walla, Jan. 8 Rev. An
dreas Hard, a poet and dramatist ot

speaker all over the Northwest for his
eloquence anu power a i -
the St. Paul's Kplscnpai cnurcu
Walla Walla, has created a sensation
unparalelled in ecclesiastic history of
the Pacific Mrihwest. when In reply
to a request for an Interview on the
subject of revivals, for a Walla Walla
ha (urrori tho hrp:hre:l in his
church by declaring his unqualified
opposition to them as an r.piseopa
llan. The subject of the advisability
of the old-fashioned soul storming
revival has recently become a moot
ed one in Walla Walla, and the cause
of considerable acrimonious debate.
Bard declared:
"EverybodyJtnows that Eplscopa
leans stand In awe of revivalism. It
is easier to imagine Bismar wear
ing a Jacobine's cap or Carrie Nation
managing a variety show than to see
the august congregation of St. Paul's
occupying a mourner's bench In the
tabernacle. To the majority of the
Eplscopaleans there Is but one thing
worse than no religion, and that Is
too much religion. Talmage. Spur
?eon and Moody were specialists on
the geography of Gehenna, and
crowded the auditorium. The Unita
rian church on the other hand is los
ing ground while the Episcopal
denomination manages to keep alive
by social prestige and frills of fash
Ion. For successful evangelism, give
a shouting hell fire preacher with a
P. T. Barnum appendix.
"I will say for my flock, however,
that they have a pretty church, good
intentions, empty benches, classic
music, fine millinery, no objection to
smoking, no wandering boy tonight,
and a clergyman willing to be 'a
scapegoat."
