change In the line-up of totals will
show, but thore is plenty of time be
tween now and the close of the con
test to catch the leader In your dis
trict, and candidates who are a few
thousand votes behind number one In
each district should not feel a lilt dis
couraged, but go after It more deter
mined than ever and lenders -luiuhl
not overlook the fact that t'.iey should
from now on try to retain th" posi
tion they now hold, as the n:her con
testants will do their level best to
displace her and carry off the hon
ors of the district.
Every contestant in the race vvh-.i
has any intention of winning one of
the valuable prizes will make a vig
orous campaign from now on, and
put forth every effort to .rapture the
leading po.-ition of her particular dis
trict, and do her utmost to retain it.
This is the proper spirit to have
when competing in a contest of thl3
kind, for, as n general rule, candi
dates who enter the race determined
to win and go about getting votes sys
tematically, generally finish at the
top of the list, when the last count
of votes Is made.
The Way Prizes Will He Awarded

the young lady who secures the most
votes of any candidate in the con
test, Irrespective of the district Bhe
may represent.
First prize to each district To
the four young ladies who finish
with the largest number of votes to
their credit in each of the four dis
tricts, after the capital prize has been
awarded, will be given a first-class
free trip to l.os Angeles and return,
Including the very best hotel accom
modations fnr one week while in the
city of ms AngelPs, under the escort
of a chnpernno. who will be a resi
dent of I.nne county.
Second prlzj in each district.
Then to the four young ladies who
finish with the second largest num
ber of votes in each of the four dis
trict, after the capital and first
prizes have been awarded, will re
ceive a six-months' full course schol
arship at the Eugene Business Col
lege, one of the best educational In
stitutions In the slate of Oregon.
Lane county will be divided Into
four districts, to which each will he
awarded at least two of the prizes
and one of the four districts will re
ceive three of the prizes, including
thn grand upright piano.
District No. 1. Includes all of thn
city of Eugene.
District No. 2. That part of I aim
county south of Creswell, Including
Cottage Grove, Wildvvood, Hazel Dell
Dexter, London and Lorane.
District No. 3. Junction City.
Florence, and all of Lane county
west of Engine.
District No. 4. Includes Ror'ng
fleld, Cohtirtr, Wendllng, Creswell
Thurston and Marcola.

matches to Portland, which consisted,
of fifty cases. Manager Duffle In

Chester Nolan, who has for the
past two years been operator at the
Springfield depot, 'has severed all

denarture for his home at Creswell.
The switch engine that has been in
use here for the past year switch
ing cars for the Springfield, Coburg
and Wendllng yards, was taken off
Monday and now the work is being
tlon by the Cohurg-Eugeno passenger
train.
The students of the Springfield
high school are preparing to -publish
a school paper, the first Issue to ap
pear about the first of February.
