The case of the city vs. Chas. May-
hew, charged with violating the ordi
nance which declares a place where
liquor Is sold a nuisance, came up In
the police court this forenoon at 10
o'clock. The defendant demanded a
Jury trial and the case was postponed
until Wednesday of next week for
the reason that the list of 1908 jurors
has not yet been chosen. Pipes Bros,
are the attorneys for Mayhew and
City Attorney Allen will represent
the city at the trial.

B. Venturrlnl, an Italian residing
at Divide, on the southern boundary
of the vounty, was brought down
from that place last evening and
turned over to Sheriff Fisk, being
charged with insanity. Ho was ex
amined before Judge Chrisman this
morning and committed to the insane
asylum at Salem. Drs. T. W. Harris
and W. L. Cheshire were the exam
ining physicians. Venturrlnl Is aged
48 years ami has an aged mother,
wife and Beveral children. He was
formerly engaged as track walker
for the Southern Pacific Company
and had held the Job for 18 years.
Lately ho has been ncting very queer
ly nnd has threatened to take the
lives of his wlfo and children. He
lias several times called on the neigh
bors to take his family away, declar
ing that they were not his.

her 120th year. She was the oldest j
white woman In the I'nited States.!
She had been in failing health for
some time at the home o f her daugh
ter here. Mrs. Wood was a native of
Tennessee and later lived in Missouri,
coming from there to Oregon.
