AX INDEPENDENT PAPF.lt Member Assoeintfd Press Tl'ESDAIf, DECKMHKH 17, 1007. rOREIGX lMMKiBAXTS RETWtXIXG HOMK That the country has been having record-breaking Immigration totals In the last several years is a fact fa miliar to all. Our prosperity and unprecedented demand for labor have attracted aliens by the million, literally, and several countries have actually sounded an alarm over the wholesale desertion of their fields and the depopulation of large sec tions. The loss of able-bodied and sturdy elements of their population has adversely affected the leading Industries and the national defense, o that some governments have created commissions to study ways and means of checking emigration to the United States and South Amer ica. Emigration from this country Is a phenomenon that has not attracted much attention until lately, it Is known In a general way that a great many Italian, Hungarian, Bohemian and other laborers return to their re spective homes in the fall, when many mines, railroads and mills "lay off thousands of "hands." It seems, however, that this year this move ment has assumed the proportions of a veritable exodus. New York newspapers reported last week the departure of aliens at the rate of 4.000 and 5,000 a day. while steam ship agents stated to Interviewers that the total emigration this year may reach 400,000 or even 500,000. These returning laborers carry the money they have saved here. They use these savings to pay off mortgages, buy homes and little lots, or for current expenses until spring, when many of them expect to come back and find employment again In the places with which they have be come cqualnted. Our immigration liws and machinery have no terrors tor them: they 'know the ropes," and bring with them just enough cash to gain admission. They also know exactly where the chances of steady and remunerative work are greatest. Of course, not all of the returning aliens will thus come back. Thous-1 anils will remain 111 their native land. I where a few hundred dollars will gi fir m mnko i hem independent.
