The Juvenile Society of Eugene needs pruning, and so does the adult society, if Rev. O. C. Wright was correct In his observations at the Ilaptlst church Sunday night. Mr. Wright swore his allegiance to some old-fashioned ld?aa concerning the conduct of young people and believed that society of today la largely re sponsible for producing young people who are unduly conceited, having too little respect for their elders, for sacred places and things and tor time-honored customs. This ten dency to push ahead our young folks weakens thel" characters, lays a frail foundation for real life and destroys the free, hnnpy period of childhood. The oversight of older persons should be insisted upon. To permit young people to picnic and have social functions without these safeguards is perilous. Too much attention is allowed between oppo site sexes, and the habit of pairing off and insisting on regular com panionship is silly and too frequently degrading. The whole tendency is toward producing smart Instead or wise people; of lowered Ideas rather then splendid purposes; and to be popular rather than' profoundly earnest. Young people should cor rect the tendency, society may help, but If neither cf these assist them, fathers and mo'hers should assert their rights as controllers and com pel a change. I'se the knife and prune off society these' unprofitable and harmful conditions. The orchestra rendered excellent service. Mr. Wright will preach p. xt Sunday night on "What Christ mas Means to Me." The ordinance of baptism will be administered. GAULT POSTMASTER ' AT COTTAGE .GROVE Washington, D. C, Dc. 16.
