Investigation of the rumor that a woman was badly beaten at a nearly hour today by pick ets of the union Is being mude by the police today. The woman is said to be Ihe wife of a non-union miner who deserted the Western Federation and has been boarding miners work ins in the mines. No arrests have been made. Dec. .14 There was a daringly conceived at-: tempt to rob a mail train carrying a large amount of money last night at Salakstu by a band of sixty robbers. Thirty yards of the track was torn mi on a down grade, and running at lull speed the train plunged over the ties. The robbers, who were in hid ing. Immediately advanced on the train guard and passengers, aud threw eight bombs and opened a heavy fire. The train guards rallied and returned the fire from behind a mass of wreckage and finally drove the robbers off. carrying their wounded with them.
