ADAMS DEFENSE
MEETS SURPRISE
AT RATHDRUM
O
nathdrum, Ida., Nov. 20. The
atate aprung a nurprixe on the de
fense In the Steve Adams case fciday
when It made an attempt to bring In
evidence of other cgnfosslons which
are alleiced to have been made by Art
ami In relation to other crimes In
which the defendant, 'it said to have
been Involved with officers of the
Western Federation of Mlnera. At
the first, trial of Adama, at Wallace,
Ida., laat February, no such attempt
waa made by the atate for the reaaon
that It did not want the defense to
become familiar with evidence which
might be uaed In the Hay wood. caae.
Now the state wanta to throw open
the entire caBe.
Most of the morning waa apent In
Hunting the right of the state to
bring In other confessions other than
that In which Adams Implicates him
self In the murder of Fred Tyler,
and the court haB taken the matter
under arivlnement.
Judge Woods stated this morning
before he had heard authorities pre
sented by the state that in his opin
ion that matter should not be
brnitght Into this case.
In the event of the state belnK al
to'vod to ask the defendant about
other confessions It Is stated thnt one
of the stale's witnesses In rebuttal
will surely be Harry Orchard. Other
wise the notorious Hurry will not bo
brought here.
Attorneys fiir tho dofense aro mak
ing ready to fight against the extra
dition to Colorado of Adams In the
event of Ills acquittal here.
There la no probability of Adams
being rearrested hero on tho charge ,
of murdering (loulc. but. It Is sure I
that In the even', of his acquittal he
will bo arrested on the charge- of
murdering Collins at Telliiride. and It :
Is claimed that a Colorado ofricer Is
already on the way to this state with
pa "or.
8. C. Thlclo, tne Pinkcrton netec-
tlve, was the flrss witness today. He
was asked whether or not at tne time
he went to Oregon to get Mrs. Ad
ams he had informel her that she
neod not tnko any great supply of
clothing with her, as her husband
would soon be at liberty to return
to Oregon. Tho objection of tho state
waa sustained.
William O'Nell, a Rt. Joe hotel-
keepor, Identified the hotel register,
showing the date of Adams' stop at
St. Joe en route out of the marble
creek region.
Adams was recalled for furtner
cross-examination. Hawley searched
the defendant's past life and efforts
were made to connect crlmlnnl ac
tions with Moyer, Haywood and Pot
tlbone. Adams' positively denied
any criminal, or even nny Intimate
relations with tho three great labor
loners. Ilawley questioned the wit
ness closely as to whnro he had got
money with which ho had paid his
oxponaea In Iravullng over tho coun
try. HORN.
