Eugene was never In better shape
financially than at the present time
because Lane county has been ex
periencing an era of unusual uros
perlty. That' this will continue, de
spite the present, financial stringency,
no one''bo understands conditions
can seriously doubt. Our banks are
ill sound and conservatively man
ned and their depositors have In
most oases no immediate use for
the funds they hold. What Is nec
essary now Is a little patience on the
part of the public until the stringen
cy is relieved in the big financial
centres, so that.banklng institutions
In the Bmaller cities can collect their
balances from the larger banks. This
will come quickly when the great
grain and fruit crops of the North
west reach the markets of the world,
and the gold to pay for them flows
westward, relieving the banks that
have advanced the money to move
them, y
The present Inconvenient holiday
condition will come to an end In a
short time and then business will
be resumed In the normal way, and
conditions In all respects will Im
prove rapidly. The people can ul!
assist in bringing a return of pros
perous conditions by going about
their business as usual, declining to
hoard their money tr heeding the
words of the croakers whose princi
pal mission in life seems to be to
make trouble. Such persons wreck
ed the large Merchant's National
bank In Portland, and probably by
their "course will bring ruin to
scores of erstwhile prosperous busi
nessmen who were Indebted to the
bank and dependent upon It for the
conduct of their business. They have
thus struck a 'blow at the commercial
prosperity of ihe entire state and In
flirted a wound that may be long In
healing. For themselves the nils-rhief-makers
have gained nothing
unless some personal grudges have
thus been satisfied at the expense of
hundreds of Innocent persons whose
welfare was bound up In the stability
of their banking house.
The conduct of the vast business
operations of the country depends
largely upon public confidence, and
in times of doubt and panic It is the
duty of every good citizen to do his
full share toward Inspiring such con.
