At a special meeting of the city
council) last Saturday night It was
decided to take some steps toward
grading and graveling North D street
from Mill street west to the city lim
its. This road Is one of our most
traveled thoroughfares and during
the rainy season becomes almost Im
passable. The farmers who are com
pelled to travel over this piece of
road 'to get to Springfield have com
plained to the city council In regard
to its poor condition and have been
very liberal In offering both money
nnd their services toward helping to
make the much needed Improvement.

Home From Arkansas.
Charles Witter and grandson, Fred
I.emley, returned Sunday from their
month's visit at Forest City and oth
er points In Arkansas. This was Mr.
Wltter's first visit to the old stamp
ing ground of his childhood days
since 1854, when he crossed the
plains to Oregon. The purpose of hlR
visit to Forest City was to Bee his
sister, who Is now nearly 74 years
old. and whom he had not seen for
over sixty years. They had not
heard of each other for over five
years and the visit was a surprise,
as Mr. Witter sent no word that he
was coming. He reports a very pleas
ant trip, but was disappointed with
the great changes that had taken
place during his sixty years' ab
sence. Hock Crusher llusy.
The city rock crusher on the hill
south of town has been repaired and
is now running full time. Three
teams are kept busy hauling the rock
on Main street. The streets wi.ll no
doubt be greatly benefited by the ten
inch layer of crushed rock, hut It Is
the opinion of the News that if the
rock was crushed much finer It would
mnke a more desirable and lasting
roadbed and give much better. satis

Just
a word
to those
who
wish to
invest
in Land
IN the first place, we ask tho
question why people buy cheap
land when, from every point of
view, good land is much more
profitable? For instance, poor
land which cannot be worked
at a profit. You can't pay for
It In a hundred years. But on
the other hand. If you buy
good land that you can work
at a profit, it will eventually
pay for Itself, whatever the
price may be; and imain, good
land Is much easier worked.
If you want to raise stock,
good land Is the cheapest. If
'on want to raise grain, good
land Is the cheapest. If you
want to raise fruit or veget
ables, good land Is the cheap
est. Why? Because It takes
no more to plow It; because
It takes no more to harvest It.
So it Is clear to see that If it
pays to work poor land, It sure
ly pays to work good land.
So when you buy, buy good
land,, nnd then If you snould
want to sell It, you have no,
trouble In disposing of It. . -
So If you want good Innd nt
the right price, come and see
us.
Wo have made arrangements
to suh-dlvlde some of tho host
large trncts In the country, to
suit those who mny wish to pur
chase their land. It Is of the
best grade, suitable to grow
anything that grows In the
West.' Our prices are right,
