BITULITHIC PAVEMENT
' IS VERY STROM
Atlantic arenue paving Is itrong
enough to run' 92-ton locomotives
over. - .
This remarkable fact was devel
oped yesterday when a massive Penn
sylvania railroad engine left the
tracks coming out Into Atlantlo ave
nue at North Carolina avenue and
ran for a space of 29 feet over the
bitulitbic pavement. . It was a severe
test, but the paving come through
with flying colors. . 1 .
The big Iron monster, 'weighing
184.00U pounds and having sharp
flanges on each of its ten wheels,
only made two small indentations' In
the new pavement, neither of which
1 were perception irom tne sidewalk,
iBlxteen feet away.
President Cherry, of the Standard
1 Bitulitbic Company, along with Di
vision Superintendent Clarke, of the
Pennsylvania railroad, measured, the
depressions after the engine had slid
;back on the track, and found them
to be only one-fourth and oue-six-teenth
of an Inch respectively. Daily

This paving la similar to that be
ing used In Eugene. The steam roller

ROADBED OF BRANCH :
IS NONE 10 6000
A number of people have noticed
the condition of the railroad track to
Wnnrlllne. and fear 'that some acci
dent will occur as the result of this
condition. While the traffic and roll
ing stock are both light, and de not
require tbat same careful supervision
of the track that a trunk line does,
It Is quite probable that the road
bed of a branch line may get In such
shape tbat the rails will not stay
down. '
At nlaces It Is reported that part
of the spikes do not bind the rails
down at all, being In some instances
Inche off. But the worst feature
is said to be the ties, which are rap
idly rotting. At certain places. It Is
said every third tie could be taken
out with but little weakening of the
road, so frequent are the decayed
ones.
While many. people may not like
to see a railroad In any condition but
that of a trunk line, whenever a
wreck does occur on a branch line,
where traffic Is so light, it Is almost
Invariably due to the roadbed. Only
two m en work on the section be
tween Wendling and Springfield.
The ballast. Is said to be in good con
dition. ......
