tlce Wednesday, "a description of !
which might be of interest if taken
in connection with the Oregonlan's
account and the company's detail as
given In a previous letter. First let
me explain that to find the range of
an object that there are two stations,
a primary and a secondary. At each
station- an "Aslinuth" Instrument Is
installed. These instruments meas
ure the number of degrees and hun
dredths of degrees an object is from
a given or datum point, and the re
ports of each instrument go simul
taneously over telephones to the plot
ting board, where the exact distance
of tho object is figured out, which is
phoned to the guns and they are
trained on the object and fired. If
the target Is moving there Is an elec
tric ticker that ticks In buth sta
tions at the same time every twenty
minutes and the asiinutli In sent three
I times a minute, from which it Is fig
1 ured the range and speed of tho ob
ject. Supposing a ship was entering
the Columbia river and the battery
commander wanted to track it, this is
what would occur In the tower in
which I am stationed: One man
would be In charge of the Instrument,
the other man would have a tele
phone receiver fastened on his head
and u transmitter swinging Just be
low his mouth. The man at the
phone would receive and give the
man at the Instrument Instructions
something like this: "Ship entering
river Just outside of bar." Tho In
strument man would swing the glass
around until he caught the front spar
of the Hhlp, when he would announce:
"Target identified, which tho other
man would phone In and receive In
structions to "track" and answer
"next reading." and from that on
the Instrument would be kept on the
forward spar and tho aslinuth 'read
at the sound of the ticker every
twenty minutes until instructions to
"cease tracking" were given.
This is what happened in the sec
ondary station Wednesday, all the
instructions and commands coming
over the phone. "Prepare for drill,"
"drill will be aub-callbre practice,"
"after command fire, flight of pro
jectile will b e37 seconds." give asl
inuth of target," "take aslinuth of
splash." We heard the first com
mand of fire, but found no splash,
as they had overshot quite n ways.
Tho next, shot we caught and from
that on they Kept getting closer, cor
recting their aim each lime as the
report of their last shot was sent in,
and In this manner Company A, a
National Guard company, after three
days in camp, won the compliments
of tho officers and men of the regu
lar army, doing target practice with
a mortar battery.
The next three days are to ho full
of excitement, as there are rumors
of attacks, calling to arms and battle
maneuvering. Government pay is al
so scheduled for Friday.
Every one seems to be enjoying
himself and the routine work is mov
ing along smoothly.
We break camp Monday morning
and will arrive home that night, prob
ably on tho local.
