Ths Earnest Kind of a Change
that Ever Happened to Any Magazine
Has Happened This Month to
THE
rut SCRAP BOOK for July la Issued In two section two complete mfiihH, eh
JL own cover and Ita own table ot contents. One of theme mectlona ht mm MIX-
iKTflflrED m.igazfne; the other la an ML-FICTION magazine. Each Is a mammoth maga
"a. Itself. The one presents an overwhelming array of human Interest mrtlclem ami
" 'irJlons'l "e other an enormous tonnage of fiction 160 pages ot absorbing stories,
t .nn aeo I treated new 'yP of magazine the ALL-FICTION magazine. Now I am creating another
-1 , Vthe ALL-ILLUSTRATED magazine. This is the age of specialization. The conventional magazine,
,,riii2 of illustrations and its smattering of fiction and its smattering of special articles, doesn't contain
" 'k nf anv one thing to make it satisfying. The ALL-FICTION magazine and the ALL-ILLUSTRATED
Spuina, joined together as a unit, strengthen each other, and make something really big and forceful and convincing.
The Only Way to Know a Thing is to Try It
TV two-section magazine idea is brand-new to the world. It is not quite new with me, however, as I have
i it odd times, four or five years of thought. It first came into my mind In response to a desire to couple, in
' the strength of the all-fiction magazine with the illustrated features of the conventional magazine. It has
2 difficult probTera to work out. Now that the idea is perfected, I wish to see what thwe is in it. It looks to
BWbevery good, but the only way to know a thing is to try it.
Two Magazines for a Quarter Easy Money
The price of this two-part magazine ia twenty-five cents, which Is equal to twelve
and one-half cents a magazine. Most magazines which were selling at tea cents
lave been advanced to fifteen cents. TI1K SCKA P BOOK in two parts means two
maazinea for twenty-Sve cents against thirty cents for two fifteen cent magazines.

of 175. She will now be a candidate
in the national contest for the pret

The Chicago Tribune Instituted a
search some time ago to discover
the most beautiful girl In America.
Other papers have been assisting the
Tribune In Its beauty quest, by dis
covering the prettiest girl In their re
spective Btntos. The Oregon Daily
Journal took up the search for the
Beaver state, and after a long can
vass its Judges have unanimously
awarded the prize to MIbs Stuart.
Oregon's prettiest girl Is 23 years
old and befor ecomlng to Portland
she resided with her parents at Al
bany. Miss Stuart is a dainty little
milliner, whose artistic eye and clev
er needle have for a long time been
employed In the production of the
smartest hatB and bonnets turned out
by the Allen King establishment, 326
Washington street. She is now in
New York, where Bho is enjoying n
whirl of metropolitan gayety, and at
the same time gathering hints tor
the very latest wrinkles in summer
millinery. Just before leaving, on
June 6, Miss Stuart was Informed
that she had won the beauty contest,
and that the 175 prize would be
promptly forthcoming.
When the contest was Instituted In
Portland Miss Stuart's name was
among the first to be mentioned as a
contestant, as her beauty had been
noted by several art photographers.
When her consent was sought, how
ever, she protested against being
