COBURC. OR.EGON.
Owing to the Tact that the Univer
sity of Oregon loses by graduation
this year four of her beHt football
men, next season there will be an
extraordinary good chance for new
material. While graduation leaves
four places empty, there will be room
for five or six good men, since Jast
fall one or two places were rela
tively weak.
I That the needed men to fill the
j holes on Inst year's championship
team will be found seems quite as
isured. Such men as Taylor, of Port
land, Kellogg, of Maker City, Mc
Coy, of The Dulles, and lllldeburn, of
lloseburg, stand very good chances
of tho team' under the most strenu
jouH conditions. Uesides these there
will be plenty of other strong candi
dates, from all over the state, whose
I merits are not so well known. Dark
j horses frequently have made Ore
gon's best men.
Old Men Will Return.
According to the plans of the old
men, nil of the other members of the
team will return. These are Ham
mond, CI II 1 la and Scott, who played
as guards; Arnspiger, Plnkham and
i Moullen, tackles; Captain Moores, at
lend; Kuykendnll, who plnyod quarter
while Latourotto was laid up, and
Clarke und Zncharias, who played at
! halves. The moBt prominent men on
the second team who will be back are
Hathaway, Group, llawley, Obertauf

Sawmill Enterprise
The Guard regrets to announce
that the building of the big Storey
Bracher sawmill on the Bangs' Park
tract northwest of the city has been
postponed until next year. Senator
I. H. Bingham, who Is the local rep
resentative of the company, and
through whose efforts the company
was Induced to select Eugene as the
site for the plant, informs the Guard
that the company enme to such a con
clusion on Monday of this week.
Meanwhile all preliminary arrange
ments and details necessary for the
establishment of such an Industry
will he gone ahead with, and by the
time the building seosan opens next
spring everything will be In complete
readiness for the erection of the
plant, which will be one of the Iarg
st on the coast.
There are several reasonB for the
postponement of the work of build
ing the mill, one of th"i being the
present unsettled condition of the
transportation qeitlon with the
Southern Pacific Company. Another
report 1b that the company, hearing
of the proposed railroad from Eugene
to the SliiHlaw, and in view of the
fact that the prospects are very good
for Its construction, thus giving the
company additional transportation
for its logs and lumber. It was
thought best to wait till the present
plans of the promoters of the enter
prise materialize before tying up with
the Southern Pacific Company. The
Storey-Bracher people have faith In
the proposed enterprise and see In It
a solution of the transportation prob
lem in Lane county.
The company is not going to give
up Us sawmill enterprise by any
means, as some mielit think by post
poning It for another year. They
own a splendid site for the mill and
several thousand acres of the finest
timber land In the county, and cannot
afford to let a matter like poor trans
portation service discourage them. If
condttlona are not bettered soon they
might take a hand In the railroad
business themselves and assist in
building the road to tidewater, which
enterprise haa already been started
and which has fair prospects of success.
