The Cottage Grove city council met
in adjourned regular meeting on
Monday night, ami at once proceed
ed to the election of a councilman to
fill the vacancy caused hy the resig
nation of Mr. McQueen. Two candi
dates were nominated, Mr. Wood hy
Councilman Comer and Mr. Van Den
burg hy Councilman Bartels, the lat
ter being elected.
Mayor Jones lit this time appoint
ed the various committees as follows:
On finance Bnrtels, Comer and
Porter.
On sewers Comer, Huhbell and
Bnrtels.
On lights Venske, Hubbell and
Comer.
On streets Hubbell, Venske and
Comer.
On water Comer, Bartels and
Venske.

There were three applicants for
the position of city marshal, Messrs.
Snodgrass, Wallace and Martin. Mr.
Snodgrass was elected to succeed
himself at a salary of f HO per month.

The state railroad commission has
ordered that a bulletin board shall be
placed In all stations upon which the
schedule time of arrival and depart
ure of regular passenger trains shall
be kept. The order iB operative In
twenty days.
Grover Long, formerly of this city,
but who has been In Los Angeles
since his marriage in Salem a few
monthB ago, has removed from there
to Portland, where he is employed in
Rebe's confectionery store, where he
used to work. They made the trip
from San Francisco to Portland by
steamer.
The funeral of Mrs. G. J. Travis
was held this forenoon with inter
ment in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. It
was largely attended by the friends
of the family and members of the
order to which her son, Attorney
L. M. Travis, belongs. Rev. D. E.
Loveridge, rector of St. Mary's Epis
copal church, conducted the services.
Judge Frazer, who addresses the
assembly of the university Wed
nesday, Is a graduate from the uni
versity, class of 18S2. Judge Frazer
conducts the Juvenile court in' Port
land, and will tell of the work of the
court. That department has been
made one of the most important parts
of the city government, for it takes
the youths who become criminals
and trains them for better things.
Judge Hamilton drove to Spring
field this morning to view the prem
ises concerned in the suit of E. J.
Frnsier vs. the Booth-Kelly Company,
wherein the plaintiff seeks to en
join the defendant from operating its
mill race, claiming that the overflow
from the race damages his lands.
The case has been taken under con
sideration, and a decision will not
be rendered at this time.
The advance man of Norris &
Rowe's circus, which will be here on
April 26, finally secured the Huddles
ton grounds, In the southwestern
part of the city, on which to pitch
the tents. Mrs. Huddleston would
not consent to the use of the grounds
until the residents in that vicinity
consented. Last year they objected
to the presence of the circuses there
on account of the files that the an
imals attracted. They made no seri
ous objection this time, and the con
tract for the use of the grounds was
signed up last evening.
