Lorane, April 12. The crowd that
was looking for the Lorane outlaw
returned yesterday about 3 o'clock
after a thorough but very tiresome
search.
Reports differ somewhat, but the
men agree now In the belief that the
outlaw has a confederate.
Mr. Fenwick has said all along
that he believed there were two of
the fellows, and Blnce his encounter
he is more than ever convinced of It.
He says that on account of his dog
taking on so during the fight he
feared the other was coming to the
rescue or he would not have left the
cabin without making sure of his
antagonist's non-escupe.
They say the cabin bears sanguin
ary evidence of the fierce struggle
which took place there. Fenwlck's
coat has a couple of bullet holes
through It. his gun barrel was badly
battered and his arms are bruised,
yet he was a lucky man, for the ban
dit would have surely shot him as he
left had be not injured Ills pistol so

' The folks at home down the river
yesterday heard a shot about half
past ten, but the men say that none
of them fired a gun till on their way
home, near 1 o'clock, and some of

people wonder If the miserable
tramp did not shoot himself, while
Others think he bus gone over into
the Smith Hiver country and that as
soon as his wound permits he will
again appear to harass these parts.

Thaw, Attorney Delmas and Harry
Thaw were in consultation for more
than an hour today. Delmas, when
urged to make a statement, said:

Mrs. Thaw looked very pale and
wan today.
Kvelyn broke down completely
while taking leave of her husband.
Thaw tried to comfort her but she
could not control her emotions. She
stated to the newspapermen that she
Is not going out of the city.
"No; it is not true. I am going to
stay right In the city where T belong,
so as to be near my husband."

A written account of the proceed
ings in the jury room published and
prepared by one of the jurors, says
that when the jury retired after the
judge's charge they gathered about
a big table In the centre of the room,
and engaged In prayer. The dis
cussion was largely in the nature of
a formal debate, and each speaker,
after securing recognition, was per
mitted to proceed with his remarks
without interruption.

At a meeting of the local alumni
association of the University of Ore-
! gon, held at the high school this
, morning, the matter of presenting
1 the status and needs of the unlversi
! ty to the voters who may be asked to
sign the referendum petition, was
thoroughly discussed.
It was definitely decided to co-operate
with the Portland Alumni and
other like organizations to raise
funds for the purpose of printing and
distributing some literature that will
put the facts concerning the insti
tution, its condition and needs before
the people and meet some of the mis
leading statements made by those
who are urging the referendum move
ment. The committee appointed for
this purpose, with Alfred Cleveland
as chairman, includes the following:
Judge E. O. Potter, Hon. A. C. Wood
cock. Judge- Lawrence T. Harris.
County School Superintendent W. B
Dillard, L. L. Goodrich and R. S. Bry
son. This committee will co-operate
with the alumni at Portland and oth
er places where steps have been taker
against the referendum movement.
