Ihe South and the Negro
C8 Covor D. C HEYWARD ct South Croll.
0 solve the race question will require not only time but pa
tience and judgment n the part of the white man, and upou
the part of the negro it wilUall for the exercise of MOllE
rnr.T SESE and a far greater appreciation of his
JiUliAL responsihility.
In the course of time the negro, who is now rapidly increasing in
certain cities of the north, may by his failure to meet the expectations
of the people of the north and his own consequent responsibility bo
couie such a hindrance AND MENACE that our northern friends
will be ready to do something more than simply give advice to the
south.
That racial conditions in the south are far from satisfactory I will
admit, but I do not believe that the southern people are standing on a
volcano and that we are not far removed from a RACE WAR. Any
solution of our race problem in the south lies as much with the negro
as with the white man, but one of the greatest barriers to any advance
ment of the negro is his NATURAL INDOLENCE.
THIS EXPLAINS HIS FAILURE TO USE HIS OPPORTUNITY. AND
IN THIS HE ALONE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DI8A8TR0U8 RE
SULTS THAT FOLLOW.

HIGHLAND MARY

your flowers.
Your waters never drumlle!
There simmer first unfauld her robes
And there the ItuigeHi tarry..
For there I took the last fareweel
O' my sweet Highland Mary.
How sweetly bloomed the gay green
birk.
How rich the hawthorn's blossom,
Aa underneath their fragrant shade
1 claspfd her to my bosom!
The golden hours on angel wings
Flew o'er me and my dearie.
For dear to me as light and life
Was my sweet Highland Mary.
WT mony a vow and locked embrace
Our parting was fu' tender,
And, pledging aft to meet again,
We tore ouraels asunder.
But, oh, fell death's untimely frost.
That ulnt my flower sue early!
Now green's the sod and cauld'a the
clay
That wraps my Highland Mary.
Oh, pale, pale now those rosy ltpa

And closed for uye the sparkling

That dwelt on me sae kindly.
And molderlng now In silent dust
That heart that lo'ed me dearly.
