has been indorsed by any organiza

has been the case it is nothing more
than a non-partisan recognition of bis
faithfulness and ability. as an official
and will bo so regarded. Such an of
ficial as Lane bounty's present sheriff
makes himself thoroughly familiar
with the laws and seeks only to up
hold and enforce them ; only the law
breaker has anyi cause to fear Mb acts.
The men who are engaged in the sa
loon business will not be disturbed
so long as they keep within the pale
of the law, neither will the prohibi
tionists have cause to fear the non
enforcement of tho statutes so long as
hev is in control of the situation.
Sheriff Fisk does not make the laws,
and whether ho approves them or not
it Js his duty to see that they are en
forced so far as his juiisdiction ex
tends In that direction. The only
question before the voter is whether
there is another candidate in the field
better qualified for tho positiou or in
whom more reliance as an official may
be placed. The friends of Fred Fisk
are willing that he be judged by that
standard, fully satisfied that the ver
dict Is to bo rendered by a majority
of his fellow citizens of Lane county.
That blue River, road matter is be
coming a really vital lasuo. The min
ers of the district have apparently de
cided that Lune county and the city
of Eugone have no use for them, elso
some reasonable elfort would be mado
to give them a means a public
highway In thla direction. They have
held a meeting and decided to turn
to Linn county for relief If tho atti
tude of this county is not changed
nnd prompt action Is not taken to
bring about more satisfactory condl
