FRIDAY, JULY HI,
Root as a Possibility.
The political wiseacres are now pre
dicting that Ellbu Root will be
Roosevelt's ebolee for the next Re
publican nomination for the pres
idency. The aubject of the presiden
cy Is always an Interesting one to
Amerk-an citizens and when a Dew
possibility comes Into prominence or
a more U made to bring a particular
man into the limelight, It la bat Dat
ura1 that tbe press abonld deal with
the subject.
It not oertaln, however, that Runt
la to bars tbe becking of Roosevelt,
or that tbe preildent baa at this early
day aet about aiding any of the aspir
ants to secure the coveted prize. Tbe
list of eligibles so fat mentioned is a
limited one, being praotloally eon
flnsd to Fairbanks, Root, Taft, Ccr
telyou and Foraker. There are indi
cations that W. Murray Crane, former
governor of Massachusetts and an
counted the wiliest politician In all
tbe New England states, has looagu
rated a still hunt for delegates. If
so, be will be found a factor to be
dealt with.
Aooordlng lo a Russian medical In
vestigator, tbe Japanese are using tbe
most harmless ballet tbat waa ever
fired from a rifle comparatively
harmless, that Is, In its after effects.
Instead of using dumdum ballets of
the deadly type surreptitiously
brought Into use In tbe Boer war, or
of resorting to poisoned bnlletr, the
Japanese have provided themselves
with rifles tbe bore of whiob Is so
mall and the velocity of tbe bullet
so great tbat tbe bullet lo its flight
gathers heat, which enables It lo act
aa germicide. The effect of the fire
la to produce anelatbesia rather than
a painful, lingering death. The bullet
used by tba Japanese makes a scaroely
noticeable penetration In tbe tissue
without tearlug, and a little red spot
as of an insect bite tells the cause of
ooma of tho wounded.

Bennington Boiler Explosion i
tjODUDuea i rem in j .;
obsly been seut to the Utter lostlta
tlons to prepare for tbe reception of
the wounded.
The scene on board tbe Bennington
when It reached tbe wharf was fright
ful. Deck timbers, heavy eteel and
Iron, beams, smokestacks, gun car
riages, scrape of enginea and "boilers
were heaped in one Indiscriminate
mass. Two of tbe gone were gone
and tbe magazine, which exploded al
most aimoltanecnsly with tbe boiler,
was nothing more than a great gaping
bole. Tbe plateau buckled and the
Inner wcodwork In places ws torn to
splinters. Much of tbe npier works
was thrown Into tbe water.
Tbe ship la now leaking rapidly and
will sink. Tbe cause of tbe explo-1
sion baa not been definitely ascer
tained. Enaloeer Nelson was person
ally making an Inspection of the boil
ers preliminary to leaving port. He
found everything all right and was
about to give orders to pnt on steam
when tbe explosion oooorred. Neleon
was blown back Into tbe etoreroon
and Injured, but not fatally. The
oiptaln and a few other officers had
not yet joined tbe ship, ana thus es
caped. Ensign Perry was nn tbe for
ward deck directly above tbe boilers
and was fatally injured. Other offi
cer! were injured, but none fatally.
The engine crew were all at tnelr
places when tbe explosion occurred,
wblob was followed by tbe outpouring
of a abeet of flame.soaldlng water and
smoke. This caught every man In the
boiler and engine rooms, blew op tbe
decks and tbrew dozens of men Into
tbe air and Into the bay. In tbe can
to others jumped Into tbe bsjj and
were picked op by tbe boats.
In going aboard the ship It was neo
eseary to step over tbe bodies of three
dead boys. Those sailors wbo remain
ed in a ooDdltloo to walk abont be
haved lu a berolo manner and did not
stop until every badly injured man
bad been sent ashore in launches.
Tbe scenes at tbe morgue and hospi
tals are terrible. Vlotima are black
ened by olnders and smeared with
blood. Very few are bafly torn, tbe
injuries in most oases being from
soalding water. In many cases the
skin, bung in ribbons. Borne of tbe
Injured are so blackened and scalded
tbat tbey oould not be identified by
their friends. Among tbe identified
dead are sailors Chambers, Newoomb,
Hughes and Benrell.
