J ""Well," nnswered the cotton bujwr, "I baa to hold folks down, Mr. Hill, yer. I was a green band, but I reckon I ripened purty quick. Thar was a young storekeeper next door to me, Joe Glbbs, as sharp as a brier. He could multiply four figures by foui figures in his head an' give you the answer In a minute. He used to tell me who would do to credit an' who wouldn't &n I always relied on his judgment. 1 "But, Lord, I cayn't set here tellln' yams all day. I'm goln' to handle a sight o' cotton 'fore sundown; it's roll In' in like a circus parade." The day's business bad really begun. Mountain men came in with sample of their cotton or grain. " Bascotu Trultt bad an armful of the snowy staple. "Thnr's a whole gang o' ten wagons from beyant the Tennessee line," he said to Kenner. "They want to know what's yore best figure." Kenner pulled the wnds apart at the window and answered: "Seven-eighths Is the best I kin do, Bas. If they take my offer glt 'era to drive It up to tbe side door. I've rented space fer 500 ' bales here. I hope they ain't water packed or got any dead niggers stowed away In 'em. Slavery's over, an we never did buy 'em by tbe pound nohow." Trultt smiled. "They'll let you have lt,M be said. "They want to tank up an' go .back home." He was turning away when Hanks .'-tained him.- "Thar's several In that g:;ng,that owe me fer supplies," he snid, pulling out his bunch of notes. "Bas, tell 'eui I'm prepared to cash the'r checks." "All right, Mr. Hanks," said the long mountaineer, "I'll tell 'em." Kenner went out to receive' the cot ton, and Hillyer followed to Indicate the Bpace Kenner was to use. This left George Buckley and the note shav er alone together. George wus writing when Hanks stood up and leaned on tbe desk near to blm. He cleared his throat and chewed his cigar for a mo ment, then be said awkwardly: "I hain't much of a hand to talk, but I've been wantln' to say some'n' to you ever since yore pa got in his trouble, but somehow I couldn't git to it. I jst feel like tellln you that I'm yore friend, an' ef It had been In my power I'd 'a' helped you out o' all that mess." "I thank you, Mr. Hanks," Goorge returned,- with - a -flush of gratitude. "I'm glad to know you felt thntway." The old man coughed nnd stroked bis beard with bis scrawny band. "I've been wntchin' yore progress, George, ever since Hillyer tuck you up. 1 reckon I was more interested In It on account o' my bad luck with my own boy. George, Bob hain't wutb bis room in hell, nur never will be." George avoided tbe eye bearing down on him when he answered: "Of course I can't dictate to you. Mr. Hanks," he said captiously, "but I IDIDK you are wruug nuuui duu, a tdidk ne win turn out an ngiu wuen he's a little older. He's In witb the so ciety set here and half of them have well to do parents, and the truth is he doesn't know how to begin. I think be wants to, but" "He's always after me to put up the money fer Mm to do business on,'' sneered Hanks. "Now, wouldn't I be a dsddratted Idiot to put money In bis hands when he hain't got enough energy to keep wood cnt to run our fires at home? He's got to fust show that he's got business capacity 'fore I'll resk 'lm. He's tbe biggest trouble I ever had, George, an' when I see what a man you've made o yorese'f on yore chances it makes me mad enough to kick 'lm. Oh, he's Jest rotten I I hain't got no money fer 'im to dabble with, but I'm here to tell you ef yon need a stake at any time all you got to do is U call on me. As I say, I've watched you." George flushed as he thanked tho oM ; man again and assured him he wai ' not in need of money. Kenner came it rubbing his hands. He was followed I by Hillyer with a telegram In hi j bands; be seemed excited as he spread j It open on George's ledger. "Tarbell A Co. offer $1.05 a bushel fer our entire j lot o' wheat," he said. "What's yon judgment, George la It sell or not' sell?" "I'd let 'or slide like a sled on a snow mountuln," spoke up Kenner. "Good-, ness knows thar's enough profit In 11 1 at that. Vou bought the Charleston an1 , Atlanta lots under eighty . - No one spoke for a moment Hanki was paying, only slight attention to the conversation. He was seldom Interest ed in what did not personally concert him. , "I jest want yoro judgment, George," said Hillyer in the proud tone a man might have in addressing a successful son. v Buckley's eyes held the eagci look of the young speculator as they met the old man's excited stare. I "I don't like to express myself," he ' answered finally. "If It were my money I would, but It is yours." - J "Well, yo're welcome to n fool's ad- i vice," put In Kenner, deeply Interested. I "I've watched the market for twenty odd jeai, an' Wil hit the celiin' 101 this thing if you don't glt out while yon! got a chance. Why. Hillyer, anybody can fwtV' i "George," tbe merchant broke In, with firm earnestness, "I am simply ill "Jest IcelWte frf.":.' you that Pm yort asking you for yore judgment. I wani that an' nothln' else." "Well, there Is nothing else for me to do but glvo It, then," said Buckley. 'If It were my Investment I'd hold .. I on." 'Thar, tbar, you old skinflint," cried Hillyer triumphantly as he slapped Kenner on the shoulder. "You cayn't scare that boy to death; he's got grit; he'll bold on till It thunders." "Yes," retorted the cotton buyer, "an1 George will be like the little boy a-hold o the calf he'll be yellln fer some body to come help 'lm turn loose." Hillyer's face was beaming. He sat down at bis desk, and, taking up a telegraph blank; he began to write. Kenner pointed to him as he touched George on the arm. "Got back bis senses at last." he laughed; "he's goln' to take that offer." Hillyer looked up with a smile. "Goodale & Bonds, Nashville, offered me 10,000 bushels by this mornln's wire at ?1.05 a bushel," be said. "I'm goln' to nab it 'fore Tarbell & Co. find out whar It's at." Kenner whistled softly, growled out something to himself, and went out of the room. Hanks turned from the win dow and leaned on George's desk. "Do you reckon yo're safe on that?" he asked, and, when George replied in tho affirmative, he said slowly; "By gum! you make me want to resk a little my se'f. Somehow It seems to me yog could turn the thing yore way, jest with that dern steady eye o' yore'n. But I reckon I'll stay outside. I never was a hand to take resks, an it'll be fun to watch you uns tussle witb It" CHAPTER VI. BUSY man can forget trouble much easier than an idle one, and the activity of his life dur ing tbe week following his fa ther's conviction was a blessing to George Buckley, Indeed, the first Sun day afterward was a sort of critical period, for every citizen of the place who had any claim to respectability put on his best clothes and nttended one of the six white churches; and our hero knew that If be was to continue to bold the position he had made for himself In the social life of the village, he must not appear to falter or to slink into retirement on account of what had happened. It was a bright balmy day. and when be went down to the postoffice after breakfast at the Hlllyers' be found the usual group of idlers waiting for the mall. There was a barber shop next door, and it was thronged with churchgoers being shaved and having their boots polished. George bowed to .several of his friends and acquaint ances, but there was something within him that made him shrink from a closer contact with any of them, par ticularly as be fancied he noted on their faces expressions of a sympathy that waa galling to bis sensitive spirit so when he had taken his mall from tbe little, glass faced lock box, instead of pausing to speak to them he busied himself with looking over tbe letters and turned down toward the ware house. One communication was from a confidential broker, Informing Hill yer that wheat had risen to $1.08 bushel and advising him to hold on. as the market showed a decided up ward tendency. . Meeting the negrc porter Jake on a corner, Buckley gavi him the tetters and told him to tak them up to Hillyer, and then, for lack of anything else to do, he entered th warehouse, shut the door after hlnc and went back to his room. Here h sat down at the window In the sun shine, and almost before be was aware of it be bad allowed a .feeling of uttei despondency to descend upon blm "What Is tho use?" he asked' himself. "How am I to fight it through?" Foi half an hour he sat thus In the very dregs of despair, and then suddenly s picture rose before his mentttl vision a picture of old man Hillyer as be sal there on the bed in the vague lamp light, recounting the one mistake of hit life and the grim fight he was still making to overcome the consequences, and a flush of shame stole over the young man. "I've promised him," he said aloud "I've promised him to be 1 a man, and I shall"! shall." ' Ito nit rrviTTipTTjcrJ, Know What's In Your Closets.
