Remains Brought to Eugene for Interment This Morning A Popular Young Lady, Sunday morning the many friends of Miss Anita Thurston, of tula oity, vera surprised and Bhooked to hear of the Tonng lady having been drowned Saturday afternoon near Uardlner, Douglas county, where she has been tetabtng school. The details of the drowning were , not learned until this morning, when the remains of Alias Thurston arrived, acoompacled by Miss Bald le re, vno gave an aaoount of the sad affair. MiB3 Thurston hud been teaching school at Sampson, a little Tillage on the banks of Sohofield creek, a boat six miles from Gardiner, and in an other week the term would have been com oleted and the young lady intend ed to go to the beach, a few miles distant, with friends Tor a bhort time before returning home. With two other girls Anita was In the bahit of going bathing in the oreek and .learning to swim, so as to be able to enjoy swimming in the surf at the beach. On Saturday after noon about one o'clock the girls went Id bathing as usual, the water being about four or five feet deep. The tide wan going oat and there was a strong undercurrent. The three girls took hold of handa and waded in and before they realized it they wer car ried into deep water and all went on- der. The girls began struggling and tried to swim, but in vain. Miss Thurston's companions came to the urfaoe and were rescued by a lady who could swim and was watching them from the bank, bnt ioita sank to tbetjottom and did not come to thBorfaoe. Help was called for and in about twenty or thirty minutes the body was found and taken fro tn the . water. Everything possible was done to bring the young lady baoK to life, bnt witbont result. Anita Thurston wai the daughter of Mrs. Marietta Thurston, of this oity, and was born on the Thurston farm, near Springfield, on the 12th of No vobmer, 18S3. For the greater part of hot lifo she lived in Eageno and received her edacatlon in the oity school s. She graduated with high honors from the bigh school Tvltb the j class of 1902, and was always prom-; inent and exceedingly popular with students and teachers, who honored and respected her. For one -year she ; attended the university, being a mem ber of the claaa of 1906, but on account of ill health did not attend school last winter but had planned to take up her studies again this year.
