WORK OF HON.
HENRY GILFRY
Henry 11. (iilfry. formerly a Kiip-no
mini, now of Washington. i. t'., well
known owr thvBou ; who owusafHnu
uem-Creswell int hiseounlyaud con
siders it as his home place, is the sub
ject of a wi iteup iu the Oroconian l y
its special correspondent at Wash
ington, 1). C. Mr. tiilfry is a cousin of
Hon. T. ti. Hendricks, a brother of
the well known llilfiy family of this
county, aud has a host of friends
IhoiiKhout the county. Ic says:
"Henry il. tiilfry, of Uunou, is
legislative clerk of the L'uited States
seuute ; has held governmental otlice
In Washington longer than any other
Oregouiau now here. He came to
this city iuJune, 1871), and went to the
clerk's desk of the senate on the first
of tho following December, where he
has served coufiuously ever since.
Iu those days Mr. tiilfry was leisl
tive clerk and reading clerk combined,
but of late, so great became the neces
sity of a reading clerk, that a special
otllcor was appointed for that purposr,
aud now the Oregon uiau is releived
from all reading, save from an occas
oual roll call.
Tho olllco of legislative clerk is one
of tho most exacting, if not tho most
oxaetiug, connected with tho senate.
Accuracy is dothaudod above all
things. Primarily, -Mr. tiilfry has
charge of the oflicial copies of all pend
ing bills, both those introduced in
the house and in the Semite. When
such bills are called for consideration,
he must be iu attendance and ac
curately record all amendments that
are adopted and any changes of
phraseology that may bo ordered.
Kveu down to puuctatiou, ho must
follow tho dictates of tho senate.
The importance of this is recoguized
when it is known that the omission
of a single comma iu a bill so import
ant as a taritf nieastirse may change
tho purport of a bill, and mean
thousands of dollars to t he lloveru
meut or to commercial interests. Iu
Mr. liilfry's time the Senate has
passod live tariff bills, the act of 1S81,
known as the tariff commission bill,
tho Mills bill, which never became
a law ;tho Diugloy bill, tho Wilson bill
aud tlio Mclviuley bill. It was upon
Mr. tiilfry that tho Senate relied for
having these bills properly enrolled
and signed by the President of tho
senate. No ono who has not beru
present In the sennto when important
measures are being amended, ufrer a
sharp contest, can appreciate the
dilllculty of keeping up with tho
proceedings and telling accurately just
what ainer.d mouts aru udoptcd, aud
what eliiplnntiousave made, how they
o-e adoptod, BO oll'l-liented do (hi
rr.,.,ii...dii7i'r'"i7i',o..mH-- Tucio are few
men holding publio onice wno can
point to so clean and creditable a
recoid as Mr. tiilfry can. It is said
that never, during his time, has a siu
glo bill boon croueously engrossed, and
what is equally creditable, during
the 113 years and more of his service
he has been absent from his desk but
three days, and then on account of
illness. Iu that loug period he has
been lato but once, and that when the
souato, by special order, convened at
at 11 o'clock, instead of at uoou as is
customary, aud oven on that occas
ion ho was at his desk a few minutes
after. Ho had overlooked tho special
order of the day before.
K01IHKD THE GRAVE.
A startling incident, is narrated by
John Oliver of Philadelphia, as fol
lows: "I was in an awfuljeouditiou.
My skin was almost yellow, eyos
sunken, tongue coated, pain con
tiually In back aud sides, uo appetite
grow ing weaker day by day. Three
physicians had given mo up. Then I
was advised to use Electric Hitters;
to my groat joy, tho first bottle made
a decided improvement. 1 coutluued
their use for tlireo weeks, aud am now
a well innu. I know thoy robbed the
grave of another victim." No one
should fail to try them. Only M
