volume of old Kentucky sketches en
titled "Days That Are .No More." Miss
Johnston bus two brothers, Anderson
and Judge Sanders Johnston. Tnese
each have one daughter. Judge John
eton'a daughter Mary early developed
exceptional power as a sluger, which
was cultivated abroad, and the young
lady became professionally known as
Mario Deccn, the soprano. She now
lives In New York eity, where she Is
established as a singer and Instructor
In vocal music. Meantime her cousin
Frances, daughter of Anderson John
ston, showed a strong bout toward
drawing and painting. She went to
Paris and studied art two years, even
as her cousin had studied vocal music;
then she returned to her home in Wash
ington. It was her Intention to devote
herself to illustrating. As au aid to the
accomplishment of her purpose she
teamed photography, not dreaming of
making It other than subsidiary to her
picture making by hand. She became
so faseluated by the picture taking that
she decided to give herself to art pho
tography. She opened her studio In
her father's Washington home, and
that Is her headquarters. Hut she trav
els nil over the country photographing

troops inarched on, but Captain Mor
gan remained. Then came a detach

the men who had capltu-ed him were
many of her old friends, who convinced
them that the recent Confederate suc
cesses precluded the possIMIity of the
north ever restoring the Union. This is

generals wre of that opinion, i'roba-

that (he southerner would probably
never be driven away from his home
again and be would not have to endure
a long separation from Lillie. Yielding
to the tersuskii of nil except his fa
ther, who was absent from home, com

realizing what he had done, was de

brushes with the enemy's cavalry Hen
ry Morgan was captured, recognized,

charge of the prisoner. A few days
before his appointed execution he Bent
for me. Dwelling on his unnatural
taking off, be was planning to render

that he had died In battle, or, better

he was among the missing and would
some day come back to her? I have
never seen n case of such unconscious
ness of the disgraceful act for which
he Buffered. He gave mo the whole
story, not the bare synopsis I have
