BRITISH CKOWN EXPENSES.
It is the general belief that tbe
annual grant to King Edward
amounting to 12,350,000 of oar
money, comes entirely from the
taxpayers' pookets. This is an er
xoneouB idea. In the course ol
centuries oertain properties have
been set aside for tbe crown and
from these he derives his lnoome.
Ue let property of all sorts, large
coal mines, mansions, hotels, bath
ing maohines, chimney stacks, at
rents ranging from a penny to
thousands ot pounds starting a
ytur.
The late Queen Victoria, rather
Una be bothered with collecting
her runts, decided to compute her
righls to crown lands for a yearly
grunt, aud her successor, King Ed
ward, has elebted to do the same,
. so that England really gets her
acv reign for nothing.
"OLD" YAMHILL'S WHEAT
GR0WLNG. A Bpeoial correspondent of tbe
Oregonian writing from North
Yamhill Bays the larmers of Yam
hill county have linen compelled to
diversity their farming industries,
lie writes in part:
Faith in tbe never-failing quali
ties ot the Yamhill county larin has
been Bbakeu in tbe last lew yeaia,
when the yield ol 30 to 40 bushels
per acre has dropped to about 18 or
HO. Tuis year inuub ol the land
will produce 14 to 16 bushels, aou
few Ileitis will yield M. Ho gieai
bas been tbe ouauge that 1 W l'er
ry, who has lived 60 years in Yam
hill oouuty, and tor 20 years oper
ated a grain warehouse at this
place, exclaims, as be views tbe de
cadence . of wheatgrowiug: ''It
would have been beitur it tbe farm
ers had never raised a bushel oi
wheal." He kept tbe warebuUet
wheu 100,000 bushels ot wheat
were hauled to North Yainbill
every year, and when large quan
tities had to be piled outside be
oause tbe warehouse wouldn't bold
it all. Tbis year the wbeal hauled
to North Ya.uoill will not be more
than 40,000 bushels.
A bold Freewater, Washington,
robber put tour mon whom be
robbed the other day in a very
ridiculous position. They were
playing tbe national gams ot poker
in a saloon when the bold, bad
burglar put in an appearanoe with
his little gun. How muoh did he
get from them? Of course four
able-bodied men would not quit
work and sit dovn to gamble with
out there was a chanoe for one ol
them at least to win eomathinRl
Ue got just ten dollars. They
oould have made about th t muoh
in a day bad tboy thrown the oarda
in the stove aud gone to work. Ue
should have kioked them, and did
it hard too.
A Southern California man gave
a Portland Oregonian reporter
some Iotarert'tig points ou Urina
tion tbe other day. He said he
kept twenty head of milk oows the
j ear a ound on allalfa grown on
forty acres. Six cropn a year are
cut Irom the land, the irrigation
beirg supplied by a gasoline engine
pumping from a seven iuoh ar
tueiaa well Wliioh does uut flow to
the surface. The water is taken
over the field iu pipes whioh are
ilir-j liuted to u low the water to
flow on the ground. Tbe old way
ttf open ditches wasted a great
amount of water In evaporation
and seepage.
A raft containing one million
lineal feet of piling is about ready
to be towed to sea for San Franoisoo
from Btolla, a small tjwn on the
Washington side of the Columbia
Ititar. When it is understood
that there arc 16,000 pieces ol
piling to 1,000,000 lineal feet, and
that tbe average is thirty pieoe of
piling to the aore, it will be teen
that a trifle upward ofS55aoresof
t mber are demanded for each
million lineal leet of piliog cat.
Portland pilioemen have been
given orders to see that all "par
lure" in saloons visited by women
be screened from observation from
tbe bar. Mayor Williams evident
ly is not a believer in the gentle
influence of woman when there are
rtimulants about. Maybe, though,
it is the olass of women that fre
quent saloon "parlors" who bave
no place in bis estimation.
A bolt ot lightning strook tbe
churoh in which a Baptist conven
tion was being held at Norfolk,
Virginie.Tbnreday. Several women
and children were injured in tbe
rush to get out, so the press report
says. Did tbe pastors remain at
their post ofdutyT
An Indiana man bas just sold
his wife to another man for thirty

like thirty oents to both parties to
tbe transaction! Tbey may com
