LIFE OF BARRY TRACT.
In all annals of outlawry of the
last decade there hu been do bolder
criminals tba Harry Tracy, the
desperately cool, aglle-wltted, foxl
lyaonning and brutally murder
ous oonrict who has for the last
few weeks terrorise! the entire
Northwest. t
From prison reoords bis crimes
or at least part of them-are known.
From the woman who married him
and for several months followed
the varying fortunes of a crook's
wife.oomes the only information
jeiiardlng his blrtbplaoe and early
Tears. Tracy is 81 Tears old. He
was born either in Lonisville, Ky,
or In New York.
The ofUcers who have been the
mist familiar with him incline to
the latter nlaoe. Tracy onoe told
a guard in the Oregon penitentiary
tbat he was born In Duchess ooun
ty, opposite New berg, N Y. He
certainly has a great familiarity
with that oonntry. On the otber
band, he also knew Louisville, and
told of assoolating with a crowd
whloh Is called the "Deer Creek
gang" in Ulnoinnati, Ohio.
In Cbioago he olaims to have
been first arretted and served sen
tenoa for some petty offense. Cer
tain it is that be came West in
1806, for even then his name
figured on the polloe reoords of
Denver as a bad oharaoter.
lbs life of the frontier was at
traotiye to suoh as he, and the next
time he was brought into notioe as
n outlaw was when the famous
"hole-in-the-wall" bainl of cattle
thelves, known In Western parlance
as "rustlers," praoipllatod what for
a Urns was almost a border war.
To the west of Grand Junotlon,
Col, baok of the Book Rooks, known
to all trans-oootinental tourists,
with others of his like, he made an
bode.
Short shrift came to that despe
ate band and almost all of Its mem
bers fell beneath the oraok of the
western ofHolal rifle. It is prbable
that in this sohool of lawlessness,
Traoy learned his deadly ooolness
and otter disregard f jr human life.
In 1897 the first offlolal record of
death was made against him, in
the killing of Valentine How, a
Colorado cattleman. The killing
was in the oourse of a running fight.
He followed it by the unprovoked
killing of William Strong, a mere
boy, and resident of the same state.
Toan he beoame known as a bad
man, and from tbat day on the
offioers were on the alert. Deputy
Sheriff Valentine Hay undertook to
arrest him for the killing of Strong
and fell dead from Traoy's aim
But the arrest was made end Traoy
was taken tt theooonty seat where
in the olHi er was killed, was plaoed
in the Aspen, Col, jail and held for
trial on the oharge of murder.
Woile awaiting bis trial he oallad
the sheriff Into his oell on an ex
cuse, slruok him ovsr the head,
bound and gagged him,' took the
keys and made his escape?, The
hue aud ory following availed
nothing, and through the hills he
rone toward Ouray,
Traoy hlmslf says that hs deold.d
Colorado waa getting too warm for
him, s he deoldo J lo make a olean
Jump ti the xsl, By a series of
daring holdups aud one hotel rob
bery in Salt Like City, Utah, he
gained money enough to ride "like
a gentleman" to Seattle,
n one in inaiouy Die rei.dtsxms
was lbs tenderloin, hi- iii'lmat-s
thue and thieves of th lo
ul', and his reoord one ol quiet
tu king from officers. II Ii Ufa lo
T.uj.us, whi.ber he drilled, was
similar. But in 1898 he again
OkOie to lbs fox ts a desrerado. In
Portland he committed to high
way robberira witb his pal and
brother-in-law, Dave Merrill.
When arrested he shot twioe st
Detective D Weiner, held np a lo
comotive engineer and rode away
on the engine. Almost by an at
cident he was wounded by a
butcher and captured. Undaunted
by previous reoords of failure in
tne West be, in 1899, after convio-
tion, held up his jailor with a re
volver, and alter exchaDgiDg a few
shots with a deputy sheriff, was
foroed to surrender.
His murderous esoape with Dave
Merrill from tbebalem penitentiary
is now a matter of suoh recent date
that it has attraoted the attention
of the entire United States.
Traoy is of medium build, close
moutbed, pleasant when with men
or women for whom be leels no ap
prehension, inclined to boyish out
bursts of laughter and gaity. In
the holdup of the Gerrelis family
oear Seattle, be whistled a waits
and asked one of his captives to
danoe with him. He reads news
Darjer aooonnts of himself and
seems highly amused. He is fond
of children and whenever be oomes
In oontaot with them caresses
them. He has the speeoh and
manners of a man of some educa
tion; he evidences at times some
signs of refinement in action and
on oooasions oan be oonrteous.
