A BANANA TREE.
Tb. Pralt Uroni Suiall End I'p aud
1. Cut While l.rl.-
Contrary to popular belief, lianaiiaa
to uot grow on the tree as they haug In
the prvK-ery, but with the small eud of
the fruit limine upward to all ap
pearances upside down.
There is prohahly no other fruit of
suih universal consuuiptlou' atniut
which so little Is known to the average
lerson as the banana. Something like
HKi.tMiUmo bunches are annually eaten
lu this country alone, but senrcely one
man In a thousand not connected with
the business kuows what a bauana tree
looks like.
The fruit is never allowed to ripen on
the tree, but is cut half or three-quarters
full" that is, half to three-quarters
developed according to the dis
tance it is to be shipped, and comes to
maturity by feeding from the stalk,
which contains a large amount of sap.
Bananas cut in this way attain prac
tically the mine size as if allowed to
remain on the tree. In which case the
bunch becomes too much of a burden
for its support and either falls or
breaks the tree and ripens ou the
ground.
After the cutting the plantation is
"cleaned," which merely consists of
severing the standing trunks within a
few feet of the ground, aud a new tree
comes forth from the remains of Its
predecessor, so that the fruit In all
stages ot growth is to be found at the
same time and the yield Is continuous.
An Anecdote of Wordsworth
A contributor to the London Specta

Your interesting article on 'Tast

Wordsworth's own Interpretation of
the lines
Those obstinate questioning.
Of sense and outward things.
Fallings from ua, vanlahtnga
as reported to me by the late Professor
Konaiuy Price. One day as he was
wnlklng with the poet lu the hills he
asked him what he meant precisely by

this effect: "Sometimes I find myself
lu a mood in which the whole mnterial
universe seems to fall away. The sense
of outward thiugs is lost. Nothing re
mains but an immaterial self, detuch
ed from ail physical conditions. In or
der to get back into the known world
of consciousness I have to clutch at
something so." Hero ho grasped the

the "American Kablus." Lord Byron
in his "Ode to Napoleon" calls him
"The CinclnnatiiH of the West." For
having a new world on his shoulders
he was called the "Atlas of America."
The English soldiery called him by the
sarcastic nickname of "Lovely Geor

castically called lihn the "Stepfather

4pple Tree. For flc.ntr and Fruit.
' Apple trees are so beautiful, even
when bare of bloom and fruit, that
they should bo grown In pleasure gar
dens, like lilacs aud laburnums. Ten
nyson speaks of orchard lawns, and
there Ib no reason except bad taste
why they should not have a real exist
ence. The gloom of tho fir tree, mng
nincent no doubt In Its own northern
forest, is mere Incongruous dreariness
when it is dotted about a suburban
lawn. Nothing will thrive under it,
and often it will not thrive Itself, but
tho apple, with all the associated beau
ty of the countryside, gives us fruit
and blossom and grateful shade. In
tho grass under it will grow daffodils,
columhtues. irises aud many other
plants, or It may be trained as a hedgo
to divide one part of the garden from
another and with ail ttiese uses may
still produce great crops of fruit. It
would be a plensant tiiBk for the sub
urban gardener with his hulf acre of
ground to grow three or four choice
apple trees with the care that others
give to roses. ljOiulon Speaker.

hearing the approach of tho mistress,
the servant went on with her occupa

Saxony possesses ono of the best
regulated Bysteins of forestry in tho
world. The forests of Saxony servo
not only the purpose of giving tho Btato

add a thousandfold to the scenery of
the country, thus attracting many tour

The inoBt Important feature of the for

keep forever alive the fountains of wa
