WEDNESDAY
JUNE 11
THE PENITENTIARY ESCAPE.
The harvest of death that con
viots Traoey and Merrill left behind
them In their sensational esoape
from the Oregon state penitentiary
Monday morning, and the ease
with which the guards misted the
men as they got a ladder and
oaled the prison-yard wall in
plain view and easy rifle shot, are
suggestive. The guards oan't shoot,
else were too nervous to shoot at
that kind of game. We suggest in
case of the capture of the thugs.
that tbey be given guard duty
Three dead men under saoh exciting
oiroumBtanoes is sufficient evidenoe
s to their ability to handle the
rifle.
Armed as they are, and desperate
as men may be from the knowledge
thbt their lives are certain forfeit
in oaee of oapture, there is sure to
be more loss ot life if their pursuers
crowd them too close. Hunting
suoh men Is not a pleasant job.
Tbeir laok of knowledge ot the
oountry will militate against their
finally getting completely away,
still the season of year is greatly
in their favor. They can oross the
oountry in any direotion, the
weather permits their remaining
or sleeping in any plaoe of hiding,
while they may prooure food from
gardens at night without risk of
being observed or located.
Ofoourse they had their plans
laid as to the oourse they would
pursue when once outside. And
men ca oool ae they proved them
selves to be during the trying mo
ments of eeoape are not liable to
lose their bends now that they are
free men They may be caught
and made to expiate their terrible
orime on the gallows, but it seems
to us the chanoes are against suob
a desired consummation of justioe
Incidentally it may be remarked
that they are good men to leave
lone unless the pursuer can catob
them napping or off their guard
Ordinarily men would be greatly
ezoited under suoh oiroumBtanoes,
but they shot as if shooting at a
target. And they got their man
every time.
KILLED SUMPfOk THE OTHER
MAN.
"A fellow out in my oountry,"
id Representative Cusbman, the
outs ot Washington humorist,
"owed another fellow $10. It was
dne on Tuesday. At midnight on
Monday night the man who owed
the money came around, woke bis
lrieod up and told him he oouldn't
pay tbt ten.
"It worried me so I oouldn't
sleep, and I just thought I'd tell
you now," he said, ' 1 - '
"Dern it," said the other man,
"why didn't you wait till morning?
Now 1 oan't sleep, either."
Looked at from a financial stand
point there is nothing ' but loss re
sultant from the Boer war. On
the one side the republios are wiped
out of existenoe, f.nrl on the other
the oost of bringing this result
about has been far in In exoess ol
any resulting benefits that even the
ages oan repay. The ending of the
Boer war brings t) mind the words
of the greatest British general,
who, after Waterloo, wrote his gov
ernment: ''Nothing except a bat
tle lost oan be ball so melanoboly
as a battle woo."
Singularly the Register after
talking Furnish for weeks wants to
hear no more about bim. II the
Republioan press of the state had
done its duty before their stats con
vention met warned their people
of the character of tbe man they
would not k crying "quits" now
Tbe Register should welcome re
minders of the fact. Tbey may be
saved making similar mistakes in
the future.

GOVERNOR GEER'S CANDIDACY j
For United States Senator En
dorsed bj Popular Vote.
Poktland, June 9 Gov Oeer has
announced bij candldaoy for tbe TJ B
senate, and la ao Interview with tbe
Journal said:
"As to the enntor"talp, I will ODly
ay that tbe flatteringly large vote
given me by tbe people will" give me
tbe oftlee without question, unless tbe
legislature sees proper to Ignore tbe
popular will which Is not at all likely.
While I have apparently carried every
county, Wood only polled bis part
vote, and my idbJ inly Is far In exoess
of tbe uewly-eleiited members. And
siooe no man voted for me wbo favored
any otber man for tbe United States
Heuate, It Is difficult to suppose tbai
suob members will have a disposltlor
to disregard tbe Instructions of tbe
