SATURDAY - J- JUNK 7
AN UNJUST INSINUATION.
Cotlaee Grove Leader: Eugene
gave a majority of over 300 against
J r Uarrin lor Uommietioner.
Where is the man thai oan't read
between the linea on this matter!
The Leader ia usually fair in its
statements, and we oannot bat be
lieve that it has been misinformed
a to how Eugene voted on county
commissioner. The return! (how
that Mr Garriu not hie party vote
in Eugene though running against
oandidate who Uvea in the centra)
part of the oonnty bat a few miles
from Eugene. We give the figures
on two stats offices, the candidates
lor wuiob, on both tiokets, were
' praotioally strangers to the Eugene
voting population:
For state treasurer Henry Blaok-
man of Morrow county and Charles
8 Moore of Klamath county were
the candidates, Mr Moore, the
Republican, reoeived 307 plurality
in the Bagene pteoinots.
. For beoretary of State Frank
, Dunbar of Clatsop oonnty and D
"W Sears of Polk county were the
candidates. Mr Dunbar, Repub
lican and present incumbent, re'
ceived 29S plurality.
For oounty commissioner, the
yote about whioh the Leader uiv
ju-tly oomplains,H D Edwards, Re
publioan, ft resident of Springfield
pieoinot, his home being but seven
miles from Eugene, reoeived 802
plurality. The figures show for
themselves the injustice of .the
Leader insinuation. Edwards got
no more than his party vote in
Eugene.

The question of the use of the famlil
eoat of arms vexes the American verj
seriously. Originally all book platet
were heraldic. That was In an ag
when eoi.le generally could not read
and when the blaion of each family, af
ahown on wearing apparel or small be
lougUics. was as well known and quick
ly distinguished as an autograph oi
,.,.m.nh tnHu. In the main, It
safe to advise Americans not to use
coat armor on their book plates, ine
uncertainty of the actual right to arms
and the extreme difficulty of getting a
drawing that one knowe 1b undeniably
correct in every detail are strong rca
tons against ita use. Heraldry is too
exact a science to auniu ui w .
and it is no small achievement to draw
the coat of arms with absolute correct
ness and yet with artistic feeling.
Though it is not very genera.. f
Uced, it is legal to copyright the book
plate design. At least two plates are so
protected In this country. This would
eeem to leave a door open for those who
wish to secure for themselves a per
sonal distinguishing mark, a quasi-
heraldry, for the drawing may m
heraldic form as well aB in any other.-Century.

Tin That Tarns to Stone.
Thorn In a tree that grows in Mexico
called the "cuijol," or stone tree, it is
of enormous proportions, both in clr-
otimfcrpnce and height It has a num
hra- of branches spreading out wiaeiy
and carrying leaves of a yellowish
green color. The wood is extremely fine
and easily worked In a green state. It
Is not given to either warping or split
ting. The most remarkable thing about
It is that after being cut the wood
gets gradually harder, and in the course
of a few years It is absolutely petrified
whether left in the open air or burled
in the ground. From this timber houses
can be built that would in a few years
become completely fireproof and would
last as though built of Btone.

Flrat Railroad Charter.
The first charter ever granted in this
country or probably, any other for the
building of a railroad was granted in
1810 to Henry Drinker by the Pennsyl
vania legislature for a road of that
kind from tho Delaware valley to the
headwaters of the Lehigh river over
the route now occupied by the Dela
ware, Lackawanna and Western rail
road from the Water Gap to Scranton.
That was before the days of steam,
and the "wagons" that were to be run
on the road were to ho moved by horse
power. That old charter and the
rights it conveyed were purchased by
the original Delaware and Lackawan
