DID THE PHILIPPINES
WITH FURNISH?
GO
HEIRED AFTER A RUOSTER.
A peculiar Btory comes ram
Portugal. A wealihy woman
named Siliva, died recently at Lis
bon, and left ber tttire property to
a roottor. She was a fervid spirit
ualist, a believer in tbe transmigra
tion of tbe eoul and imagined that
the loal of ber dead huaband bad
entered the rooeter.
She oanied a epeoial fowl bouse
to be built and ordered her servants
to pay extra attention ti tbeir
master's wants.
Tbe disgust of ber relatives over
tbe will caused tbe Btory ti become
publio, and a lawsuit might have
lollowed bad not one of the heirs
adopted tbe simple expedient ol
baring the wealthy rooster killed,
and thus becoming himself tbe
next of kin.

What does the Oregonlan think
boat the Philippines now that Mr
Furnish is defeated? Before the
eleotion it was "no Furnish, no
Philippines" with the Portland
Daper. Roosevelt was to be dis
credited in tbe defeat of the Pen
dleton fee-grabber, and all manner
of evils were conjured in cave of de
feat to hold the party to its knit
tiUK.
President Roosevelt has probably
heard of the eleotion, and if he
compares the figures with previous
eleotioos oannot but cooolode that
the people of Oregon had good
reasons tor leaving Furnish at home
hat they knew tbelr business.

SOME FIGURES ON THE GOV
ERNOR VOTE.
How was Chamberlain eleotelT
Whoever took Furnish out on the
canvass was responsible for the re
mit. He would hare been easily
eleoted had he staid at home.
Let us do some figuring! In
1900 MoKInley had 13,141 plurali
ty over Bryan In a total vote ol
79,911. JloKlnley got 46 626, and
Bryan 83,385. Now the vote is
praotioally divided evenly between
Chamberlain and Furnish. Con
sidering the presidential rote
party one, and allowing
Furnish a thousand Demooratio
votes, Chamberlain was rotei
for by 7,570 Republicans, about
one oat of every six who voted
for MoKInley.
Of oourse factional differences
were largely responsible for the
vote in Marlon and Umatilla
counties while Chamberlain was
popular at home Portland. But
those oountlet alone would not
have eleoted Chamberlain. Fur
nish showed himself. 'That was
enough. Ha was defeated.
If you do not think about Eu
gene being a pretty good stage town
be aroond tbe hotels when the
tages leave at six o'olock of week
day mornings. There la considera
ble passenger travel on tbe Florence
route and up the MoKenile and
Willamette rivers, also to Coburg.
Tbe farther away Furnish got
from home tbe better he ran an
anusaal experienos in politios. In
Union county adjoining Umatilla,
tbe latter his home county, Fur
nish failed to carry a single pre
olncl. He lost Umatilla by 597.

MISS FAY LEE,
President of the Shakespearian Club. Kanaaa City.
Your booklet came to my
home like a message of health
when I had suffered with
headache, backache and bearing-down
pains. I was weak,
nervous and hysterical and
had not consullcrj any doctor,
thinking it would pass away
in time, but instead I found
that the pains increased and
were more frequent. I de
cided to try Wine of Cardul
and in a short time was much
improved. It seemed to act like a charm.
I kept up the treatment and the result
was most satisfactory. Words fail to ex-
rss my gratitude for the suffering that
now saved me. I am in fine health,
physically and mentally. I can only say
"thank you', but there is mucti more in
my heart for you."
KARING-D0WN pains are the
worst tlmt women know. If
you are suffering from this trou
ble you need not be uncertain
about it. The pains in the abdomen
and back that feel as if heavy weights
were pulling down on the nerves of the
stomach are "bearing-down pains".
They mav not be particularly severe at
present fi'it they are growing worse.
That hcaikiche which nearly drives you
distracted now is caused by the terrible

nervous tension. The nerves
soon begin to give way under
the strain. Youperhaps jump
at any unusual disturbance,
or laugh or weep, hysteri
cally, at no apparent cause.
That i9 what Miss Fay Lee,
603i North Seventh Street,
Kansas City, Kansas, was
coming to when she rescued
herself by taking Wine of
Cardui. The Wine made
hor a atrono-. healthy woman
ao-ain. as it has made a million other
women strong and healthy. By induc
ing regular menstruation the entire
system is relieved of the terrible wasting
drains. The ligaments which hold the
womb in place are strengthened by a
healthy flow and that organ is returned
to its normal position. Returning
health is the result. This is what
Wine of Cardui has done for thousands
of the best women in America.
If you need advice write The Ladies'
Advisory Department, The Chatta
nooga Medicine Company, Chattanooga,
Tenn., describing all your symptoms
freely, and a letter of advice will be
sent you. Secure a $1.00 bottle of Wine
of Cardui from your druggist to-day.
A million suffering women
have found relief in
Wine of Cardui.
