TUESDAY

THE FINISH OF A BOODLE
CANDIDATE.
Therankandfileof th Republican
party have the opportunity to keep
wondering how a contention of
cererkl hundred representative
Republican delegates could nom
inate euoh a man aa Furnish. Not
to mention the taming down ol
Governor Ueer and Judge Lowell
for the comparatively reoent aoqui
eition to the party, his fee reoord
as sheriff of Umatilla oounty and
as a depnty United States Marshal
was enough to defeat him.
We cannot but believe that
many who voted for him did so
under protest from their better
judgment, and are really glad that
he has been defeated. In all the
h'Ptory of Oregon there was never
euoh another example of a boodle
oaudidate from primaries to the
close of the polls.
and from 100 to HO sheep can be
sheared a day. This is about the
same rate the animals can be
(beared of their fleece by band,
but it is argued the machines are
worked oloaer to the hide and thus
more grease is secured, and more
weight given the wool.
The Oregon Sbort Line will
resort to a novel plan to keep down
ihedufet along the roadbed. Be
ginning Thursday of this week a
train loaded with crude petroleum
oil will pass over the road, sprink
ling oil as it runs. This oil train
will oover the entire distanoe
through Southern Idaho, where the
lust has been offensive to passen
gers. The Albany Democrat is very
ankind to the editor of the Ore
gonisn. It remarks: "Three men

"Is Oregon baok of the Adminis

That was a parting Oregonian
hot In its Election morning issue
Aooustomed as one is to Oregoniar
misrepresentation in dealing with
politioal questions this willful at
tempt to mislead and deceive sur
passes previous efforts of that kind.
The Oregonian well knows that
Republloan legislation alone ha
made trusts possible, and that they
have been organised and operated
entirely under Republican control,
both ot oongress and the ohief ex
eoutive. Farther that no praolioa.
or effective stand against trus
organizations has yet been takeii
by the Republican oongress, iba
lone has power to break the com
binations in restraint of trade
Not taking the total absence 01
ehame that permits the making ol
suoh a statement into aooount, it
does seem strange that the editorial
management of the Oregoniarj
plaoea suoh a low estimate on the
intelliRenoe of its readers as to disb
them out suoh stuff.

Sheriff Withers' handsome vote
in opposition to a candidate who
like himself bad served four years
in the office, and against whose
qualifications not a word oould be
said, is exceedingly complimentary
uot only as to the manner in which
he has oonduoled the office but as
to his personal worth. It was a
clean fight, and Sheriff, Withers
won out in the face of a consider
