NOT MUCH, BUT A DIFFERENCE
Ibtougb the efforts of scientists
one of the indent differences be
tween Franoe and England will
aoon be removed. It ia a email
difference, but very disturbing to
the wise men on both sides of the
ohannel, who have been worried for
generations over the faot that the
farisand Oreenwloh observatories
do not agree on the time of day
there is a difference of exactly six
teen one-bundredtbs of a seoondl
Accordingly speoial buildings
have been ereoted in Oreenwloh In
whiob a Urge staff of Frenob and
British mathematicians will figure
for the next year or two trying to
agree upon whioh side lies the
responsibility.
SCALP BOUNTY LAW.
Western Oregon taxpayers" are
wrongfully taxed to pay bounties to
ooyoie soalp-buotert over in
Eastern Oregon. The Forest Grove
Times puts the oase well.
The county treasurer paid over
to the state treasurer last week the
sum of $2,870.94 oolleotei as a soalp
bounty tax. That is what Wash
ington oounty is paying to help
other oountiea skin their wildoats.
Kverv man on both the leslslative
tloketa should be pledged to vote
for' the repeal of the present soalp
hounty law, and the adoption ol
one permitting oountiea to offer
suob bounties as tbey wisb. That
is about the moat important work
he oan do for the taxpayer! of the
oounty when he goes over to Salem,
and they should insist that he do
it.
1NGALLS ON DELAWARE.
"Don't you have to stand a good
many jokes at the. expense of a little
state like Delaware?" some one
asked Representative Hall, of that
state.
"Ob, yes." replied Mr Hall, "but
no one ever equaled the saroastlo
remarks of the late Senator Ingalls.
He said of Delaware that it was
composed of two oountiea when the
tide was up and three oountiea
when the tide went down."
The Prohibition party ever oomes
smiling to the soratoh to be com
pletely knooked out of existence
till another election. It never
elects anyone but that makes no
difference, it gets out atloketjuit
the same. It does not eyen hope
to eleot its candidates.
It is to be hoped that the report
that a Mlohlgan undertaker has
auooeeded in compounding an em
balming fluid that will petrify tbe
flesh and preserve the features is
not true. Poor mortality deserves
better than to be made a mocking
how. 'Dust to dust" Is the fit
nd for the oast-off tenement.
Ceoil Rhodes left a poor New
Jersey relative fifty thousand dol
lars In bis will. They had never
got along very well together,
Rhodes even sending him a outr
when he wanted to go to South
Afrioa to the effeot that there were
"already enough Rhodeses In South
Afrioa." Still to the oredit of
Rhodes he remembered the poor
oousin.
Every homeseeker in the United
States who oomplies with the land
laws Is entitled to 430 aom of land.
By the homestead aot, 1G0 aores oan
be acquired. Under the desert
land aot, If be has never file! on a
homestead, ha may secure 820
ores. If he has he oan acquire
title to 100 aores. lie oan boy 160
ores ot timber land. There are
no desert landi in Western Oregon.
Across the Cascade range of moun
tains, though, there is plenty of
desert for the taking.
Taooma has a rea.inder of tbe
boom days of 1888 in the sale o( the
Tacoma theatr for tlOO.000. It
cost 250,000 in that year. It
would tire the people who put their
money in tbe venture to figure out
how much interest on the invest
ment was lost in all those years.
That Spokane doolor who is In
bankruptcy with sixty-seven thou
sand dollars ol liabilities aod but
four thousand of assets would be
well patronized should be open a
school to show people how be did
it, There are a whole lot of men
willing to go in debt to any extent,
with no thought of paying. Then
when tbe oiaeb oomes their liabili
ties may just be measured by tbe
extent of their ability to get oredit.
