THURSDAY
- MARCH 13
THE "OLD SOLDIER."
There is always plenty of talk
about 'old soldier" nominations
prior to the meeting of the Lane
County Republican convention but
when the event oooors the "old
loliier" geta little, if any more than
the privilege of voting for tbe
nominees. The K agistor says the
names of Qeo F Craw, J T Row
land and Frank Reisner will be
presented for oounty treasurer, and
says that with three aspirants
"their strength rill bo divided"
with tbe result th it neither of the
old soldiers will be nominated
Tbe Register should explain how
lb it oan happen if a majority of
tbe convention re tlly desires the
nomiuation of a v iteran. There in
a good deal of ta.Ty sproad about
and bouquet-throwing in the effort
to oatub the "oi l soldier" vote.
And tbe "old soldier" votes as he
pleases.
Mark Ilanna is still contending
for steamship subs dies, both build
ing and runnii g. Tbe people
would have to pa.r for it, while a
few builders and owners would get
tbe benefit. Still there are lota of
voters who oonslc'er it the proper
thing to pass laws that make a few
men rioh like An ly Carnegie that
oan give away twenty millions and
(till have enough to keep him in a
first-olaas hotel if he lived to be
two hundred thousand years old.
Why not let this money stay whero
it rightfully belcngs, among the
people who create it with their
labor?
Here ii how the Fendleton Bast
Oregonian throws oold water ioe
water as It were on the proposl
tlon of a first-class hotel for
gene:
A publlo-splriUd oitiien of Eu
ene is contemplating ersotlng a
"Qrst-olass hotel" at a ooat of
$35,000. Just as well attempt to
build an up-to-dnte steamship for
ou oenis, a nrst-oiasa botel m it
tow a like Kngenx oannot be built
for lest than $75,000, and it would
not net per oent on that amount oi
money. First-elans hotels In small
towns are not good investments
lor tue owners. Tbev are the Door
est form of real estate investments,
but they are splendid things with
wmon io advertise a town.
Startling as It may seem the
statement is madd that there are
sixteen ships of the Federal navy
and fifteen torpodu boats lying in
ordinary .awaiting ofiloers and orews
that oannot now txi supplied. Tbe
senior olses at the Naval Aoademy
at Annapolis is to be graduated two
months ahead of time, and oflioers
now on duty there are to be trans
ferred to oruising ships of the navy.
This dearth of officers and mon is a
uhronio oondliion lu tbe Navy De
partment, and it o st tbe govern
ment in losses much more annually
than the pay of tht men needed. f
A SUverton, Marlon ejuuty, girl
has been injured to tbe value ol
$15,000 by tbe re uaatof a young
firmer of that vioi iity to oousuin
inate a marriage promise. It It
interesting to letrn tbe specific
nature or the damage inourred
which she sets t.t 115,000 five
thousand in speoiU damage, loci
of sluep, appetite and wedding
fixtures, and ten thousand for tbe
wreck of her pea o( mind. It
looks a little bigb but maybe tbe
poor girl suffered that tnuob, be
sides tbe young rai n may be able
to afford it.
With the mem try ot ttie "Isles
nf Greeoo" "where grew tbe arts ol
war ana praoe," etc, it pains one to
read in a Chioago Recurd-llerald
correspondence that "the modern
Cireek peasant is nt a tidy person,
nor is bis wife, and tJie street tbat
parses bis dwnlllne, the house in
a'hich he lives and all bis sur-
rouudingd are repulsive tn tbe eye,
the nostrils and tl t benee of pro
priety." Tbe average Indian can get more
amusement out of a given quantity
of whiskey than any other human
being. As an instance last Friday
Johnny Taokum.a British Columbia
aborigine, filled his skin with bad
red liquor up tbe coast from Van-
oouyer, and ran amuok. He b'jat
his squaw to death with an oar and
shot two white men who attempted
to interfere with his diversion, one
seriously.
Deacon's Poverty Ball,
Tbe annual poverty ball given by
"Deaoon," wblcb occurs on Friday
evening of Ibis week, promises to b
the moat successful ever given. The
following fines will be Imposed for
various oflesees:

Working 24 Hours a Day.
There's no reat for thoie tireless little

of that and swell upl Oregon lumber

that's nothing. It couldn't be other

Tbe Wendllng mill la one process of
evolution. A quarter of a century ago
O W Holcomb built a little mill and
sawed out 3000 feet a day of feoolug,
selling it all at f 10 to settler , who

one thinks that Id a little while longer
all tbe timber will be gone, But
