THE EDITOK RCBBED A SORE
AND GOT A FIGHT.
Drummer What started the
fight?
Landlord PErrvvaLE Tavern
Obi Charlea Heory Pidd gol
married day before ywlerday, aud
in today's paper the editor of the
Weekly Plaiadealer followed the
announcement of the event with a
l.ttle pleteantry about bopin' that
11 their trouble would be little
cnea. This ia the (bird time
Charles Henry baa been mamed,
md he's got seven children to
t how for it, and the bride baa bad
one husband before and still has
live children. And as the editor
'ras afraid the groom wouldn't see
he point of the joke he stopped
him in front of the post offioe, the
nost poblio place in town, and
itartod to explain it to him in a
oud voice, whereupon Charles
Henry hit him on the nose. I pre-
mme it was the mont natural thing
in the world that they should
hare a firtht. That's the way it
started, anyhow.

GKEAT SALT LAKE SINKING.
The decline in the surface of
Great Salt Lake is causing appre
hension among the people of Utah.
That interesting bony of water hae
been steadily sinking for a number
of years, but the c tueea of its de
cline are not well understood. It
is thought by soma that the lake
is suhjeot to cycles of obange which
correspond to like oyolee ofyearB
of heavy and Ugt t rainfall and
that it is now undergoing one of its
low water periods from which it
will soon revive. 'J 'he movements
in the waters bae also bees
thought to be related to the de
velopment of agrionltural and
Biasing interests, wbioh divert
large quantities of water from the
streams which' feed the lake, for
use upon the laud.
During past years the cutting of
the timber on the neighboring
mountains has been ' unusually
heavy praotioally destroying the
forest protection of the head, waters
of a number of streams whose
waters flow into the lake. The
cutting of these forests is supposed
to have injured the flow of the
streams, and thus to have affeoted
the lake level. ' The vain of prop
erty near the lake and oertain
lines of business are unfavorably
affeoted by the steadily deollning
, water level.
B 8 Pague, who formerly made
weather in the Weather Bureau
of&oe at Portland, is now located at
Charleston, Boutb Carolina. In a
letter to Governor Gear Mr Pagne
writes entertainingly of the city
bout wbioh shot and shell flew eo
promiaonously for many month
during the war of the Rebellion.
Mr Pague has no sympathy with
would-be Northern philanthropists
iu their mUdireoted efforts to "ele
Tate" the negro. He writes:
, This city has 22 000 whites aud
33,000 oolored. 1 he colored live
on the white. The negro problem
oan beet be solved ly the Southern
people let ' them alone. They
need the negro, the negro needs
them.
