MONDAY - - FEBRUARY 10
CERTAIN RESULT OF PERSECU
TION. Berlin dispatch: Emperor Wil
liam ii bo incensed at the epiritual-
iul movement that he has issued a
notification through the North
Uorman Gazette that all persons In
any way oonneoted with spiritual
ists, faith-healers, Christian Hoien.
tists or kindred oults will hereafter
be rigidly excluded from the im
perial oourt.
The Emperor baa taken the beet
method to promote the spread of
these ismi. It is the old story of
the forbidden fruit. Tell a man
be shall not lnrestiKate or believe a
doctrine and straightway he setB
himself to finding out all about it
the prohibition making him a
convert where otherwise no interest
would be taken. The raok, fire
daalh In its most horrible forms,
have been met by religious devotees
without shrinking. Christian mar
tjra are numberoj by tho thou
eanJe, while other faiths have also
held the ardor and dovotlon of
their devotees so that they laid
down life, all that is held dear to
man, In upholding their belief.
Fan a fire and it burns brighter.
AN "OLDEST INHABITANT"
SAYING.
Doctor Finders Fletrie, the eml'
cent archaeologist, announces that
a rtoent Assyrian excavation un
covered a tablot with a ouueiform
inscription that plcoe the origin of
a saying that does service at the
present day away back in the misty
past. Ilere is the literal transla
tion: Now, there were gathered to
gether at the sarao plaoe for the
telling of storlos many of tnem
that have lived long in the land,
and one of them lifted up his voioe
ana sam:
"Behold, it groweth cold with
muoh extremeness."
Whereupon another made answer.
saying:
"Verily, it doth. Hut let us
separate and get hence, for here
oometh Methusalem, the ased, and
if we tarry he will tell oa again ol
the oold spell of the year 40."
And they got henoe with muoh
peed.
Over seven hundred relinquish'
menls have already been made in
the land offloea at El Reno and
Lawton, Oklahoma. This means
that over seven hundred men who
drew farms In the government land
lottery have sold their olaims. It
will be remeinbared that the lottery
plan was adopted as the best means
of shutting out land speculators.
But it seeiua to have been a great
fitilure. It was just as easy for
rpeoulators to line up at the regis'
irauion ofDoea as it was for bdme-
isvkers, and the speculators stood
an equal show.
