STATE AND COUNTY TAXES.
The Stale Journal of today fully
explains the tax levy of the prenenl
ysar as It relates to roads, schools,
ooanty and state. It says;
Last Tuesday, Jan 7, the county
ooort of Lane oounty levied the
late, sohool, roal, road dietriol,
wblh was formerly oolleoted by
road suDervisorsl and ooanty taxes
to be paid in the year 1902 on the
assessed values of 1901, amounting
to a total of twenty-four and one
half mills. It Is apportioned an
follows:
BtaU tax, seven and seven-tenths
mills, or one mill more than last
vear. caused by the large appropria
tions made by the last legislature;
sohool tax Ave mills; lor oounty ex

lealsd bv road supervisors last year.
four snd six-tenths mills; for
oounty debt and Interest, one and
two-tenths mills; for eleotion ex-
neases. that did not have to be

one mill: total twentv-iuur anti
one-half mills. Of tbia-auiouni
twelve and seven-tenths mills or
more than one-half, is sta t and
school tax, fixed by law, over whiob
the oounty court has no oontrol in
levying or expending. The re
maining eleven and eight-tenths
mills is for all county purposes
lnoluding expenses fixed by law
suoh as interest, court expenses.
furors, witnesses, justices of the
peace, road supervisors, indigent
soldiers, registration of voters,
judges and clerks of elections, eoalp-
Dounties anu everything erne tue
legislature oould think ol. it also
Inoludes the funds to be sxpendod
In repairing and building roads and
bridges, which can be controlled by
Ihsoourt, but oanuot be materially
reduced without serious injury to
the oeoDle.
The tax for oounty purposes is
the same as last year, twenty-two
mills, but to this was necessarily
added one mill extra for the state,
and one and one-hall mills foi
road which has formerly been ool
looted by road supervisors, making
a total of twenty-lour ana one-nan
mills, an lnoreaae of one mill for
the state, but the sams for tht
oounty, the only ohange being thai
the one aud one-halt mills oolleotod
last year by road supervisor is now
to be oolleoted by the oounty, and
will secure a great deal more work
on the roads than uuder I tit
lormer system.
A CHICAGO STADIUM.
Chioago will get ahead of the
rest of ths earth a long way In the
rsotion of a stadium in whiob
the Olympio Games to be held In
thatolty in 1904 will take plaoe.
The Athens stadium of 1890 seated
about fifty thousand people, but as
Chicago must l at the hetd the
on proposed will esat a half more,
sevsnty-flvs thousand. Theroofwill
be a novelty. While the olrons-
llke Mat on the oircumferenoe of
ti anna will be protected by per
manent roof that over the arena
will b arranged so it oan be rolled
back, leaving ths open sky for a
paoeofl30 by 800 feet. , -An
unusual feature is an ar
rangemeht for dividing the stadium
Into three or more buildings fur
epeoial occasions, whsn the whole
euaoo will not be required. At
either end, or In the center, a hall
lor any sort of a gathering can be
made in three or lour days at a
nominal expense, Another feature
of construction is that there will
not be a pillar or post In the whole
interior to shut out the view from
any point. The firal rjw of teat
is five feet above the arena and the
t ipmost row eighty feet above.
Of courts President Hill of the
Great Nprlhern Railroad defends
ths mergment of the northern com
peting trans-oontlnental lines. He
claim that their oontrol onder one
managsmsnt will result in
Steadily decreasing rate of trani-j
portatioo, In other words give a
man a monopoly of any business
and be will voluntarily lower the
charges pertaining thereto. That
way happen in that wri A when
the liou aud the luuib mil liadown
together without the larch being
on the inside of the lioo, hut lor the
present the public may well be ex
cused for a reasonable doubt.
A Mrs Fltzsimmons of New
York aiks the court to cut "Fits"
from her name. She object to the
name because of the notoriety
brought it through the pugilist.
Then the neighbors relei to her
children as ths "little Fitz's." The
lady is oversensitive. Hhe will
not find a name that has not been
unworthily borne bv someone.
