Astoria, Ore, Deo SO, 1901.
Editor Guard, Eugene, Ore:
Dear Sih: It reply to your fvor
asking that I inform you of tba loca
lity selected for the Mokenile river
aalmon hatchery on my recent trip to
that atream, alao aa to bow the aite
compared with otbera In the atate, and
when the hatchery ia expected to be
pot Id, etc, I beg to atate that aa yet,
no particular altuatlon baa been defi
nitely aeitled upon. The river I ex
amined quite thoroughly up aa far as
the MoReuzle Bridge aud waa very
muoh pleased with lta oondltioua gen
erally. It la a apleudld atream of
water and ia apparently a natural
apawning ground for the Chinook and
Steelhead variety of ealtuon from near
lta mouth te lta aource. It affords a
great many desirable situations for our
work, auy one of which oonld be put
Into first-class ahape at a very email
expenae.
I fuuud the river being need to a
oouaiderable extent for logging Pur
posea along the bauka of the lower
river. Tills of course will Interfere with
work that we are desirous uf duiuit
tbere, but at the same time it la not a
serious matter for u to contend with
and tbere la no reason wby we should
not do well euough by going in up
above where this logging ia being eo
extensively carried on. The further
up tbn river we go I know tbe fewer
salmon we will have to handle for
hatchery purpose?, but lu a caee aa
tbla I feel that il la far better for aa U
have tbe few aud a aure proposition,
than tu have a proposition where we
are liable to lose our entire batch of
tlxh at almost any time aod ot wbloh
one days loas means tlie entire eeaaon'a
loss, for wueu a baton of ealm u ouoe
geta away from you that nds the situ
ation eniirely for that eeaaou.
Tbe most desirable situations that I
huve louud on tbe upper waters, were
at Gate Creek, Blue lilver, the Mason
plao aud near tbe Fiun hotel.
(JATK CRKKfC,
Tula altuation ia abi ut balf a mile
above the mouth of Gate creek. Here
found, on tbe Thompson place, a
very desirable spring of water, which
la very essential in tbe matter ot main
taining a batoheiy establishment, and
one mat is very aeiaom rouua on
rivers, as this, in aucb close proximity
to a desirable fishing ground. Tbe
river at tbla place la a very pretty
piece of river for our work aod nue
that could lie lacked aud fished at not
a very great expense. It a quite large
aud in consiquet'ce would require
quite an extensive set of racks iu order
to reach it properly, but lumber la not
expenaive aud if we would get a nood
supply of Balmnn tbe auiouut of rack
ing that we would have to do would
not be felt very materially In tbe
matter.

BLUB RIVER.
Just in above tbe mouth of Blue
river I found auotber very desirable
piece of fishing ground at tbe head of
an lalaud tbat divides tbe river almost
equally. ThiB I fouud to be one of tbe
prettiest pieces of fiahlng grounaa mat
ens ever runs serosa, and a pltee tbat
could be racked and fished at no great
expense, but tbere I fouud no aide
stream or spriug wltb which to auppiy
a set of baicbery buildings, and 11 we
weretogelu onto tbla situation we
would have to contend with tbe mat
ter of getting a water auppiy for
halohery purposes out of tbe main
river. Thle could be easily dens at a
no very great expense, for tbe river
riaea quite rapidly from this piece of
fishing ground for half a mile or more,
and from a casual observation of the
altuatlon, I would aay, that one would
not have to go more than s quarter of
a mile up tbe river hi order to take
tbe water at a sufficient elevation is
meet all reqoirementa.
THE MASON PLACE.
Tbe aituatton at the Mason plaoe I
fnnnrttnhe very similar to tbat at
flat ereek : there I found a very dealr
able aids stream of water wbloh would
furnish a hatohery plant with an
abundant supply of tbe purest spring
water, and tbla waa alao dlreetly at
and adjacent to a moat desirable piece
of river for fishing purposes.
THE FINN HOTEL
Tbla situation la about balf a mile
below the hotel. There I alao fouud a
rood aide atream of water for a water
auppiy and a set of gmuoda similar to
the Blue River altuatlon, inougu mey
do not ofler qalt the advantages.
Tbe river above Blue River affords
several ether desirable altuatlona but
nothing equal to tbeae mentioned and
us I prefer not to get 100 jar up 1
anuld recommend one or tneae otoera 1
In preference to anytbiog above. I
Aa regards our contemplated work
tbere on tbe river I beg to atate tbat
another year, we will teat tbe river
thoroughly witb a aet of racka tbat we
will put in aod determine It possible
bat tbe river la really equal to, out
of ci'Oie we cannot expect too much
