HOP MARKET.
Rapid Advance Reported
Local Dealers.
EN9LISH MARKET STRONGER.
Salem Statesman Not. ZO.
The bop market Is assuming mora
life tban has been noted for a month,
and prices are beginning to advance.
as a result of the sudden strengthening
of the English market, where, in spite
of the phenomenal crop of 1901, the
market has, according; to advices re
ceived by leading dealers yesterday.
Advanced 8 shillings. This has siartled
American brewers, aud they are now
ooming Into the market lo supply
themselves with the necessary stocks.
and naturally, the growers who still
hold their bops, will secure better
prices for their product.
The Horet & Lachmund Company
yesterday purchased a lares lot of hops
at KlJ cents a pound, that a week ago,
could have been bought for 10 cents,
and other lots have been sold In the
local market at good prices, a large
number 01 bales changing hands yes
terday. To such an extent baa trad
ing In hops grown lately that there are
less tban 15,000 bales about 20 per
cent ol the crop of 1901 In the bands
of growers in Oregon, and those deal
ers holding the stocks, will make a
handsotus profit on their holdings, to
reimburse them for losses sui'alned
during the past few years.
Mr L 1 Lachmund, of the Hirst A
Lachmund Company, says that higher
prtoescanDow he confidently looksd
forward to and that tt,e low pries-, the
result of the work of short sellers, are a
thing of the pr.t for this season.
