MONDAY - - OCTOBER 21
WILL TRY NEW GRAINS.
Industrial Agent Judson is send
ing out to farmeranlong the South
ern PaoiQo lines in Oregon a
large number of specimens of
grain, with the objeot of introduc
ing bettor varieties than are now
grown in the territory. The new
grain oomes from all parts ot the
world from Europe, Asia, Africa
South America and Australasia,
cot to mention other grain sections
of North America. There are 90
varieties of wheat, about 80 varie
ties of barley and about 20 varieties
of oats. Several thousand buBhels
will be distributed among farmers
who will take an interest improperly
cultivating them. Of course, the
distribution is free.Jbut the supply
is necessarily limited, and only
those who can give the grain pro
per attention will be supplied. It
is expected that moat of tho new
grain will not show great imnrove
ment over the varieties now grown,
but if there be only one or two
marked Improvements over the
present varieties in each speoles of
grain, the objoot aimed at will have
been accomplished. And it is pos
sible that suoh improvements may
be found as will entirely ohantre
the agricultural situation in West
ern Oregon.
The grain thus sont out for trial
in Oregon has been gathered from
all quarters of the world by the &a
sistance of the Department of Agri
culture at Washington. The work
of cultivation, to ascertain ita
adaptability f t the conditions pre
vailing here, is undertaken by the
railroad company, in harmony
witn tne State Agricultural College,
the two BQnnoies working together
for the general good of the Mate.
Reports will be required from eaoh
paroel of seed sent out, as to the
natural conditions, the amount of
cnltivation bestowed, and the re
sults. It may b j also that thoee
who successfully grow this grain
will be asked for seed for still
further distribution.

their old fight for legislation that
will prevent the railroads from
