Tn: . sling one day on the Hudson
itiver railroad with a friend In the
;rmy he rvlatod to me a personal ex
y.Tlface which Is to say the least bar
rowing. Tin- couverat!on of my friend con
verted tbe tedlousues-i of the Journey
Into lUjoyineut, and before we had sup
posed ourselves at Peeksklll we were
surprised at the shout of the brakeman
announcing the station, "Garrison!"
"Do you not stop hero for West
Tolut?" I inquired.
"No," replied the captain. "I am go
ing to Hudsou to dine."
Immediately after isslng Harrison
the train steamed thro gh the long tun
nel which takes Its na .ie from the sta
tion. My friend was Klent for several
minutes after, when, turning to me, be
said, "I always feel chilly when 1 go
through that tunnel."
"For what reason?" I asked.
"I was caught in It ono night," said
the captain, "and I think I never so
narrowly escaped death as on that oc
casion." I begged him to relate the particulars,
and he obligingly described the occur
rence as follows:
"You hove lived long enough in Cold
Spring." said the captain, "to know
that the Saturday dinners of Mr.
arc exceedingly delightful. Well, on
oue occasion 1 was present at one of
these Saturdny evening reunions, and
there was such an uuusmtl amount of
enjoyment thnt time new by with dou
ble Its ordinary rapidity. General
Scott had taken his seat nt the whist
table, and, having been beaten, lie
could not bear to abandon the game
until he bad had his 'revenge.'
"A' group of West l'olnt professors
watched the players with deep interest,
and I myself became so absorbed in
watching the game that when I at last
remembered that 1 bad agreed to meet
Livingston at the depot and go with
blin to Garrison I found, ou looking at
my watch, that I bad but seven min
utes to get to the train. I made my
adieu hnstlly and walked rapidly to
the station, but arrived too late. The
train bad gone.
"The night wns delightful. The etura
were brilliant, and the moon waB near
ly full. 1 felt unusually well, and be
ing an excellent walker I at once re
solved to walk to Garrison, for the dis
tance was about three miles only and
1 bad on several occasions walked
over that portion of the railroad. I ex
amined my time table and saw there
were no trains due for some hours. I
did not at that time know It had been
that day changed.
"Alter plcblug uiy way over the long
bridges on piles and testing my pow
ers of walUlng a rail over the draw
bridge 1 reached the mouth of the tun
nel. It looked darker und more for
bidding than 1 expected, and 1 paused
a few moments before 1 resolved to go
through It. 1 had not gone far when
I was In perfect darkness. Knowing
that tbe trnlns run on the right band
track, 1 took the one on the left, ln
order that 1 might not be overtaken In
the rear and could see the engine light
if approaching me in front as soon os.
possible. I bad reached about the mid
dle of the tunnel when I beard the dis
tant rumbling of a train. I listened
attentively and fell sttlstied that t lie
cars were coming from the direction of
Cold Spriif:.
"1 therefore coutinii.'d on the track
I bad taken. Presently the sound of
the engine whistle reverberated in the
dismal pnssr.ro. and 1 was startled
with tiie siii'ulur effect, for at one In
stant I was sure It came from the
north, while a rccon 1 sound seemed
to come from ttte opposite direction.
In fact. I souh Iit'ciinie so uncertain
as to the way the train would approach
that 1 t:ood still a.id watched both en
trances. In a very few moments I
saw the bright light of the locomotive
sweeping around the curve near the
northerly mouth, and 1 felt relieved,
for the train was on tbe other track.
But the unearthly noUe of the rapidly
moving ears was enough to terrify
even a stout heart.
"While watching the passing train I
suddenly became aware of another
train entering the tunnel from the op
posite direction. Kscnpe seemed Im
possible. Hoth tracks were occupied,
ami I knew If I lay down upon the
middle of the truck the cowcatcher
would Inevitably tear me to atoms.
"1 thought of the trench outside of
the track and sprang across the rull to
throw myself down ou It, but us the
beam of the engine light came rushing
toward me I found that there was not
room. Why my wits did not desert
me has always been a wonder, for 1
felt that I had but a second or two to
live and would be killed In a most hor
rible niauuer, but a merciful Provi
dence directed my eyes to an unusunl
ly large cavity In the wall, caused by a
blast near a seam, and with tbe rapidi
ty of thought I sprang luto It and press,
ed my back sgalnst the rocks.
"The cars rushed by and so close that
the wind caused by their motion blew
off my bat, and a few that were an
Inch or two wider than the rest rublicd
my clothing, as I afterward saw by
the marks. Oh, my friend," said the
captain, placing big band, wblcb wns
like Ice from agitation, upon mine, "If
yon knew the agony of those moments
the suspense, the bope of escape and
tbe terror lest some car a little wider
than the rest should drag me from Unit
shallow cavity and crush me, the be
wildering, rushing, crushing noise of
that fearful train and the interminable
time It seemed to take to pass by you
would not wonder that I cannot even
now pass through that tunnel, although
safely In my car, without a shudder
and a prayer of thankfulness to Provi
dence for not forsaking me In those
tryiag moments."
