A TRUST ARTICLE AND PRICE.
We have a oonvinolng proof of
prosperity at loaBt as it afleots us
and the other fellow, the trust.
In June 1809, a little over a year
ago, the Gtjahd bought news paper
for $2.85 per hundred pounds.
About that time the paper rannu
iaoturers got together in a trust and
began to gradually advanoe the
price. Paper bought the other day
oost $4.00 per hundred pounds.
Figure out the percentage of in
crease $1.15. It is nearly half
the June, 1900, price, to be ezaot
forty per oent. That is what a
trust has done to the newspapers
We do not charge a oent more for
Buosoription or advertising rates
now than then, yot our paper
ooBts us forty per cent more. We
do not love trusts, in faot believe
we are being robbed by one of them
I he material, balm treos, Irom
which this paper is manufactured
grows along the Willaniotte river.
It coBts no more today than it did
in June, 1900. ' AVe have not heard
of any Increase of wages to the Ore
gon. City paper mill employes.
ins 1 ortlanu dealers were just as
noxious to sell us paper June, 1900,
as they are today. They were not
losing money on the goods. We
are anxious to know who gets that
forty per cent advance that we are
paying. We like prosperity but do
not want the other fellow to get it
all.

Postmaster Van Cott of the New
York poatoffioe, is receiving the oon
gratulations ot bis friends on the
new mail carts which be designed.
A half dozen of the little vehicles
have been put in commission much
to the improvement of the mail
service. The cart is a unique affair.
The collector, instead of sitting
alongside the driver in front, oc
cupies a small seat at the rear on
the leithand side. From this he oan
easily step to the street, where he
collects the mail and hops on again,
signalling to the driyer by means
of a Bpeaking lube. It Is said that
n an ordinary town of 25 boxes
there will be a saving of a minute
a box by the use of these carts.
Forest Grove Times, Republican:
Some papers and publio men are
makkg a new outcry against for-
tigners tince the attack on Presi
lent MoKinley, and demanding
that the immigration laws
should be so amended that anar
chists cannot get in. That
scarcely seems to be the remedy
for the evils complained of. No
foreigner has ever sluin a piesident.
It is native-born murderers whose
hands haye been stained, and it is
our own evil broc J that we must
liarn to restrain. Foreigners may
give birth to most of them, but
lhy are brought forth on our own
soil, and must be dealt with as our
own ohildren."
