Augusta Dane murrleJ a man whu
turned out to 1-t a drunkard aud a
gambler. Cue t'iy bu U-fl her, takiu;
witb bltu tbelr Utile boy, 5 years old.
Tbe next day found Augusta In New
York. Two duys wore spent In a fruit
less search. All ber husband's haunts
wore visited. In Philadelphia Augusta
was a;uju bullied lu ber search. Still
sbo despaired not, but weut on her
way to Baltimore. Arrived there, she
resumed her weary, weary search.
As she turued away from a place
where ber inquiries had agalu beeu un
successful ber hope and courage, for
the flrst time since her loss, began to
fall ber. As she walked slowly along,
uncertain wbere next to direct her
steps, a gentleman passed and looked
earnestly at bur. Augusta, oppressed
with her sad and anxious thoughts,
had not noticed blm. All at onco a
voice saying, "Mrs. Dane, you surely
do not Intend to pass mo without rec
ognition, do you?" caused her to start
and raise her eyes. It was a friend of
her husband who was speaking to her.
"I beg your pardon, Mr. Davis. I
was thinking and passed without see
big you," answered Augusta.
"You are on your way, I suppose, to
Join your husband and child. Wbat a
Hue little fellow that boy of yours lsl
You must be very proud of hlrn," Da
vis remarked.
Augusta's heart gave a mlgbty throb,
and in a voice which she vainly en
deavored to steady she replied:
"Yob; I have been detained at home
and did not Join them at tbe time ap
pointed. Wbere did you leave Mr.
Dane and and iny son?"
Ah, how her voice trembled as she
asked the question!
"I left them In Washington," replied
Davis. "I met Fred at M 's last
night (naming a gaming bouse In tbat
city). I only arrived In Baltimore an
hour ago."
Augusta scarcely beard any further
words that were spoken. She had room
but for one thought. She roused her
self sufficiently at length to utter a few
words of leave taking, and the next
train to Washington bore Augusta on
ber way thither.
At length she reached her destina
tion. Stepping Into a carriage, she
gave the order to drive to M 'a.
The carriage stopped. "Walt here
for me. Keep your carriage door open.
I shall not be away long." And she as
cended tbe steps of tbe house.
A negro opened tbe door In answer to
her ring and refused her admittance,
bnt Augusta was prepared. Holding
up a $10 bill, she said, "This Is yours
If you permit me to pass." Sambo
found It Impossible to resist, and tbe
door was opened to admit ber.
"Which way must I go?" Inquired
Augusta as soon as she was fairly In
side the hall.
"Do you mean right among all the
gentlemen, ma'am?" asked Sambo, witb
open eyes and mouth.
"Which way must I go?" repeated
she.
"Right at the top of the stairs, ma'am,
where you see the bright light from
nnder the door."
As Bbe placed ber band on tbe knob
she breathed a silent prayer, and tben
sbe opened tbe door noiselessly and en
tered. Tbe room was brilliantly light
ed. Her eyes were dazzled for a mo
ment; then ber quick glance took In all
at once. Seated at tbe table near tbe
center of the largo room and with his
back toward tbe door was her husband,
and by bis side stood a little child.
Yes, there was ber boy, standing like
an angol of light amid tbat crowd of
desperate men.
No one had seen her enter. 'All were
Intent on the game then In progress.
Another moment, and, owing to some
turn of fortune, fearful oath burst
from Frederick Dane's lips.
Augksta took a step forward cst
tben. Her boy turned and saw ber.
"My mother, ob, my mother!" scream
ed the child and sprang Into ber nrms.
With her child clasped to ber heart
Augusta felt a power within her strong
enough to defy tbe world. Her hus
band bad risen from bis seat, roused
by the childish exclnmatlon, and stood
gazing at ber In speechless amaze
ment Tbe room was crowded with
men, who were looking on In speech
less wonder at tbe strange scene
enacted before their eyes. Augusta
was tbe first to speak.
"Frederick, let mo depart In peace
witb my child."
"Neverl" Interrupted he, "Put down
the cblldl" And be made a movement
toward ber. Augusta turned white to
the lips.
"Frederick," sbe again pleaded,
"think of our child's future. You sure
ly would not doom our boy to live a
life such as yours has been!"
"Cense your talking and give me tbe
boyl" shouted Dane, and again he
made a movement toward her.
Quick as thought Augusta raised ber
band and leveled a small revolver .at
him which sbo bad concealed In the
folds of her dreis.
She clasped the child still closer to
ber breast as she spoke.
"Frederick Dane, I am a desperate
woman! Take heed. Do not defy ma
further. For God's sake. leave me and
do not force me to desperate deeds)
Stop! Advance one step and tbe cone
sequences be on your own head!"
While Augusta was speaking she
had moved nearer tbe door. Her hus
band stood as If petrified. With one
last look Augusta turned and left tbe
room.
Augusta Dane's days now passed
peacefully and quietly. Her son grew
up Into a true, noble. Honorable man
and became one of tba most distin
guished members of the bu In his na
tire city.

THE CURATE AND
THE MILLIONAIRE
BY UAI1RY I'AIH.
' "llut does It uuver occur to you,"
asked tho curate as bo poured two tea
spooufuls of port Into his glass aud
passed the decanter, "does It never oe.
cur to you to ask yourself wbat Is the
goud of It all?"
"Never," said the millionaire, with
decision.
"You never regret you see, after nil,
nioucy is not everythlug, Is It?"
"That observation Is frequently
made," said tho millionaire, thought
fully, "and It Is very misleading.
Money Is not everything, but It is
much nearer to being everything than
anything else Is. There Is quite a
good deal of cant talked about money.
It is comforting emit, of course. Oua
gets the same kind of thing about
birth. Personally, I always mistrust
anything that comforts."
"Hut Is It nil cant? Take the ques
tion of health for Instance. Mouey
cannot glvo health, mid It Is better to
be well thnu to be wealthy."
"I ofteu wonder why people go on
saying thut money cannot give bealtb
when they must seo every day that
money does glvo health and tlint pov
erty causes illness. If work Is Injuri
ous to me, I can afford to give It up.
If I have to winter abroad, I can do It
easily, without considering the ques
tion of expense. If an operation Is re
quired, I can pay the very best man to
do It aud uuder tho very best condi
tions. Tho poor man can do nono of
these things. My ordinary way of life
Is much more healthy than his. The
food tbat I cat Is of tbe best quality
and lu perfect condition, while ho ents
adulterated rubbish and stale garbage.
Ills house Is 111 warmed and Insani
tary, and mine Is perfect In those re
spects. Tbe poor man dies, and In nine
cases out ot ten It serves him right."
"Isn't that rather a terrible thing to
say?" said tbe curate nervously, play
ing with his wineglass.
"In nine cases out of ten poverty Is
the result of stupidity. You blame a
man for bis moral defects, and I blame
him for his mcutol defects. One Is
Just as fair as tbe other. And both tho
mental and moral defects are about
equally capable or Incapable of rem
edy." "Surely not," said the curate earnest
ly. "A sinner may bo reclaimed, but
you cannot give a man an Intellect"
"You should nso tho same word In
both cases. You may reclaim a man's
Intellect just as you may reclaim bis
morals. I have done It I did It in
my own case. I admit that mental
reclamation, like moral reclamation. Is
rare."
"It all seems so dreary and fatalist
ic," ssld the curate.
"So It Is," tho millionaire agreed cor
dially. "As I told you, I don't like com
forting cant Tho best fablo tbat ever
was written was the fablo of tbe fox
and the sour grapes.
Tho cuiato seemed to reflect for a mo
ment "Tell mc," ho said darkly, "do
you valuo tho affection of your rela
tives and friends and those whom you
have about you?"
"Of course," the millionaire owned.
"Perhaps one values tbat most of all."
"And do you mean to tell mc," asked
the curate, flushed witb triumph, "that
that kind of thing can be bought with
money?"
Tbe millionaire concentrated bis at
tention on his cigar with the air of a
man who can provide a platitude with
out troubling to think. "Hut of course,"
he said, "you can buy affection as easi
ly as you can buy a pound of tea and
on almost tbe same commercial prin
ciples." Tbe curate stuck to It "Are yon sure
tbat It is genuine affection?" be said.
"There," said the millionaire, "I don't
trouble myself. I get respect and sub
servience while I am there, and really
I don't care wbat tbey say when I am
not there. You Bee, I don't think about
these people very much. It would an
noy' me If tbey showed hostility while
I was with them. It would give one
all tbe trouble of having to think of
new things to say. But they nre per
fectly welcome to say what tlicy like
behind my back, because they haven't
got any money worth mentioning or
any position, and tbey don't matter.
But as a mattor of fact, money can
generally buy genulno uffectlon, an af
fection that Is just as real as that
where there has been no valuo re
ceived." '
"Really, tbls Is too cynical," said tho
curate.
"Not at all," replied the millionaire.
"In fact, 1 am, on tho whole, less cyn
ical than you. I still believe In grati
tude, and It would appear that you
don't Generosity Is an admirable and
popular quality. You must admit that
And It Is very easy for a rich man to
be generous. Ue Just plugs In a few
presents, as a gardener puts In seeds,
and afterward ho gets the fruits
quite genulno fruits too. 1 sometimes
wonder bow anybody who Is not a mil
lionaire believes In genuine affection.
It Is certainly a luxury for tbe rich."
"Well," said tho curate, with a sigh,
"I must not let yon off. We owo $250
on the church restoration at 8t Uur
nahas. Olvo me a subscription. I'll
see If It makes mo think moro highly
of you."
"I nover subscribe, I either do a
thing or I leavo It alone. I'll tell you
what I'll do I'll wlpo out tbls debt for
you altogether If you preach tbe opin
ions you have heard from me from tbe
pulpit"
The little curate got quite excited.
"I'd sooner steal the money and tben
cut my throntl" he said. "If I could
have all tho monty at the prlco of hav
ing your views of llfo as well, I would
not do It"
The millionaire smoked for a mo
