JUDGE ROBERT EAKIN
Aooompanylng a fine half-tone
Illustration is the following sketch
of the life of Judge Robert liakin in
the Pendleton Tribune:
Robert Eakin, judge of the Eighth
dlslriot, lives at Union, Oregon.
He was born In Illinois In 1843, of
Irish parents, and oame to this stale
with them in 1800. By his own
effort he obtained a oollege educa-
on, graduating from Willamette
nivorsity in 1873. He read law
with Geo B Dorris, of Eugene, aot-
ing as deputy county surveyor, to
keop u expenses. In 1874 be was
admitted to the bar and entered
upon the praotloe of law immedi
ately at Union, where be has been
very successful. Upon the forma
tion of the Eighth Judioial distriot
in Maroh, 1805, he was appointed
oirouit judge by Governor W P
Lord, whioh aotloa was based upon
a petition from the bar of the dii
trlot. In 1800 Judge Eakin was
elected his own successor.
Judge Eakin is one of the most
prominent oitlseni of Eastern Ore
gon. He has a splendid record in
polities'. His name was before the
legislature of 1808 In connection
with the office of United Slates
senator, and he is considers J a good
man for the supreme benoh ol the
tate.
MORGAN'S BANK. ;
From the World.
It must be acknowledged that J
l'ierpont Morgan's bank, the First
National of New York, is far out
classing the famous Mr Reilly, who
kept the hotel, in the gentile art of
'doin' quite well," even when
judged Irom the viewpoint of gl
gantio latterday profile in business.
This flourishing bank bas just
declared a dividond of 1.000 iter
cent on its old oapital stock of
1500,000, this amaiing division of
profits amounting to nearly $10,-
UOO.OOO. The news reports tell us
that it bas for years paid a 100 per
oent dividend on this old capital
isation, but now, having iuoreased
its capital stook to $10,000,000 and
turned 14,000,000 of additional
profile. Into its roservefund, it pro
ceeds to break records with this
1,900 per oeut dividend on the old
basis.
If the people at large are flour
isblng in reasonable proportion to
tbs flourishing of the First National
Bank of New York City the country
is Indeed In fine condition. Let us
hope that they are, because it woul i
"be ominous if 1,000 per cent divi
dends were being declared by banks
at the expense of the wealth-pro-
duclog peonle.

followina item io tlie Albany Hr
aid, dealing with one of these
children of nature whose childhood
&s passed la this country:
Jitn Whoeler, an old-lime In
diaa, wail in Albany yesterday on
his ?ay to Brownsville. This was
hie first visit to this city in 26
years. Jim was raised by James
Wheeler, near Suver, and was quite
a familiar figure in this part oi the
country years ago. Jim went t
sobool over near the Wheeler farm,
but - the ' pale-faced" children
laughed at their dusky brother an I
he couldn't stand the joshing. He
staid away from home one night
and Mr Wheeler whipped hica
when be came back. This aot
offended the red youth and the
next day be left for the Grande
Rondo reservation and has remained
a part of the tribe ever sine. He
has been married five times and
baa a large family. The old-time
Indian is rapidly becoming a thing
of the past.
An Oregon genius has invented
and placed on the market a gopher
gun that seems to be a success. Sev
eral gophers have been killed and
several persons laid up for repairs
by the wonderful little weapon.
In a suit for divorce againBt a
former Salem couple it is charged
against the husband that be plays
several musical instruments and
inhabits the saloons. The divoroe
is granted.
"Oh, you cruel boy, to take those
eggsouf, of the nestl Think of the
mother bird when she comes"
"The mother bird's dead, miss."
a, How do you know that?"
"I see it in your hat," Punoh.
