SLIGHTLY EMBARRASSED.
Says tbe San Jobs CbI, Mercury:
There is promiee of good to tbe
prune growen ia tbe drought now
oconriog la tbe i.Ml u luey nave
trie good sense to bang together and
thus be in a position to reap tbe full
benefit of tbe situation. Tbe apple
crop will be very light, and con
sequently tbe supply of dried
apples will not be so heavy as us
ual. All through New England and
New York there have been r sports
of a small crop ot apples this year
and tbe market has been counting
cpon the good oropB reported in
Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas
and Kansas, but tbe hot weitber
bas made terriflo inroads upon the
epple orchards of those states.
Kruit is dropping badly and what
remains on trees is not maturing
well. The summer appleB usually
to ulentiful in the market at this
reason are very scarce. This is
trby there is snob a good sale for
California fruit in tbe East at
preeent this and the faot that the
watermelon crop is very light and
if pcDr quality. Everything
K)intB to a scarcity of dried fruit
next winter and to a consequent
ftroog demand for prunes. By
sticking together and marketing
their crop through the association
the prune growers would be in
position to get all tbe market
would stand for their fruit, If
they do not do so and get into the
bands of brokers and speculators
tbe latter will make the profits and
tbe growers will not. There nev
er was or never will be a better op
portunity for the growers to make
cbemselves independent of tbe
forces that have lived upon them
and absorbed tbe profits of their
business than is offered by tbe eon
ditions prevailing this season. All
that is required is for the growers to
stick together loyally and trust to
the wisdom and the judgment of
those whom they have ohoeen to
manage '.be affairs of tbe assooia'
tion.
Tbe Coquille Bulletin last week
said tbe father of a 17 year old
young lady, in that plaoe, told the
editor a lunny story about a young
man who b topped at his home one
night lately. The young man

leave be realized that a heavy rain

the girl's father asked him to re

very neryous and agitated. He sat
opposite a mirror and saw that ho
had forgotten to comb his hair;
then he dropped his fork on tb
floor and as be stooped to piok 1:.

went from bad to worso until finally
In despair the young man qui

when he touohed it he turned pale
He thought it was his shirt and in
his nervous exoltement while dress

garment Inside his trousers. That
aooounted for the smiles and his
embarrassment. There was no
time to lose. He hurriedly stuffed
the supposed shirt inside his trous

family arose from the table there
was a oraab. The dishes lay in a
broken mass on the floor; the young
man pulled two feet ot table oloth
out of his trousers and fled through
. the door. He is yet in the baok
woods of his home near here. The
young lady he oalled on is open for
engagement to a less nervous young
man.
