TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR Mc
ELROY. The following I an excerpt from
a tribute to the late Prof K B Mo
EIroy, paid by Prof J B Horner
recently before the Memorial As
eooiation at Corrallii:
"Near the borne of Professor Mc
Elroy in tbe oity of Eueene there Is
a neat church built on a atone
foundation tbiokly studded with
marks of pebbly white. Upon ap
proaohlng the building, however,
the atone prove to be ancient
cemeteries filled with (hells of
animals which lived long ago npon
the shore of some forgotten sea; and
here and there you may observe the
traoes left by lbs waves, the trades
of the birds tbat walked along in
the sand one day, and the print of
the loaf that tell and lay theie,
M'ithln a million years or more the
shore hardened Into rook, and the
rook has held every tra through'
out the subsequent centuries. In
like manner will be preserved the
work of Prof MoElroy, who has
done so mnoh for the promotion of
Oregon pabllo sohools; for that
whioh ; is taken Into men's lives
leaves its permanent impressions,
. more enduring than time, more
preoious than sholl or leaf or
templed stone. Therefore li the
shell of an animal exist a thousand
or a million years to adorn a temple
for a man to worship In, how muoh
longer will the man live for whom
. the shell was created.
"A drop of dew on tbe leaf In the
early morning, mirrors and ab
sorbs the whole sky above it
whether It be blue and clear or
whether It be oovered with clouds;
likewise thousands of children
from generation to generation will
mirror and absorb into their lives
the InQuenos of Prof MoElroy's
school work In Oregon. And when
the superstructure of the temple
decays and the foundation crumbles
and the shells have all been- ex
posed to view and then have die
appeared forever, and men forgot
even tbe ediQoe where once multi
tude assembled for worship, the
enduring work of the Oregon edu
cator will live, and be more beauti
ful as It grows to assume grander
proportions. And centuries hanoe
whon the sohoolbouse and the
chapel will have done their mission,
scholars have made olassio tbe story
of Oregon, snd literature has
winged ber flight to the western
shores of America, teachers and
students will make pilgrimages to
yon little bill where a pathway will
be worn across the green to the
grave of him we love; and when the
little oak whioh shelters this hal
lowed spot will have older grown,
fallen aud been forgotten, kind
hands will gently smooth tbe
ground and p!At a vine by the
grassy mouna where we laid faini
And there will be a quietude and
pensivenee, a Bower jilacitea a
memento, and a trayer br allied
by tbe last ree.iog-place of bim
who contributed hie beat endeavor
to the establishment of common
schools; snd men will return to
their bomea to rveume their labors
with renewed determination, to
emulate the aoble qulitia found
in their fellow beings. 'Tis true
the flowers will bloom at beautiful
and tbe birdsong be as gay, tbe
men build and occupy, and the
earth swing through space as safely
as if In tbe bands of God, and tbe
sun, moon and stars sustain their
glory then as cow, but the un
dimned lamp of learning our bene
factor lifted to the Oregon school'
house spire will shine with greater
effulgence, illuminating the path
way of men, brightening their
future and blessing their labore;
and tbe world, ever changing, ever
improving, ever growing heavenly.
will be better for the life of this
educator, patriot and gentleman
who gave the choicest within him
for the bsttfrment of mankind "
The Portland Telegram, repub
lican, after recounting tin numerous
republican caodiJatee for governor
says this of one of the most popular
democrats in Oreeon: "But our
friend Chamberlain is yet to be
considered. He, lik Kurnieb, was
never beaten yet."
Trvinz to build up a business
that will abide, mid keep on abid
ing, without advertising, is very
much like a married man trying to
have his own way just a sheer
waste of nervous energy.

DR. ROBERTS EXPLAINS.
Apparently Perfect Vision is Not
Always a Proof That tbe
Eye is Perfect.
The science of optics aud retraction
bava developed aud proven It a fact
thai a perfect eya never falls lo Its
vision It dlsii.no. Even though a
person may have perfect distant vision
tbey may b ooiulling It through an
Imperfect eye. The eye being complete
ly controlled by tbe brain, means aoon-
slant brain strain if tbe eye is In tbe
least Imperfect. The brain in turn
draws upon tbe nervous system to re
gain tb strength necessarily used to
get perfect vision; therefore, tb brain
or nervee are generally affected before
th vision, which only grows bati
becaus of lots of power to compel per
fect vision through an imparled eya.
Sow, a a perfect eye never falls for
distant vision, It Is the refractionlst'a
business to make it perfect with glasi
and then It should never fail. Wby?
Because It has been made perfect. If
your glasses are not so ground tbat
they absolutely correct every error
and there may be several you will
nil have trouble and be compelled t
cbuliRe your glasses lime after time,
and vour eyes will b a constant source
of annoyance and expeuse to you.
This change and expense Is absolutely
unnecessary.
Dr A T Roberta baa fitted glasses for
distant vision for the laat 16 years,
with tbe distinct underetsnding tbat
If at any time In the future tbe vision
could be tbe lesst improved, the
change should be msde without extra
cast.
If you have badache, or suffer from
nervousness, it Is elmoet abeolu'e proof
that your eye art) Imperfect. When
failure to obtain relief by tbe use of
ordinary rem dies demonstrates tbe
fact tbat the trouble does not lis in
ordinary causes, oall on Dr R .berts
and be will make a free examination
aod give you uch an explanation ft
your eyes and their connection with
tb nervous syrtam tbat you cannot
help but see wby tbe eyes may be tbe
cause of your trouble.
