ENGLISH AND AMERICAN LOCO
MOTIVES.
The superintendent of the motive
power of the New York Central
Railroad says the complaint about
the ineffioienoy of Amerioan built
looomotives by the British is due
to the faot that thev are oonstruoted
to meet the requirements of the
track, tunnels and other peculiar
ities of English railroad c instruct
tlon, therefore are not the. true
Amerioan type.
The superintendent says, also
that English roads nurse their
looomotives and keep thorn to an
old ago, while the practice of this
oountry is to drive them to full
oapaoity until they show marked
weakness, then replace with new
maohines.
It is not surprising to read the
opinions of the cabinet officers
that President MoIClnley deserves
a orown of glory jr to about the
same effeot for announcing that
he will not be a oandidate for a
third term. While no one may
impugn the President's patriotism
it is not improbable that General
Grant's experience with the third
term petard had a very conspic
uous place in the Preeident's recol
leoltous. Like Grant he might not
be able to secure the renomination.
William C Whitney has offered
$75,000 for the leased colt that won
hiro the Derby the ntber day. But
Whitney can pay that amount
easier than most men could pay
seventy-five dollars.
Nioaragua money is at a oon

Our nleee, who bad consumption lu an

The sheriff of Multnomah oounly
had ten deputies out the
first ten days of this month col
lecting bioyole licenses. The result
was very disappointing to those
who hop 3d to see a substantial in
crease to the bioyole-paths fund.
The deputies collected $242 in
licenses during that time, but their
salaries reaohed $250. It was time
to discharge the deputies when
they failed to oolleot enough for
their salaries.
The Engineer Corps of the United
States army will explode 7200
pounds of dynamite in the Narrows
of New York harbor, shoitly. The
dynamite was used as a defense
of the harbor during the Spanish
war, being connected with the shore
by eleotrio wires. Alter the war
dosed it was taken up, and as the
government has failed to find a
bidder it is proposed to make one
grand display.
West Point authorities bare
issued a manifesto defining the
rules as to hating, threatening all
sorts of punishment to the cadets
who engage in the pleasant pastime

mutilating new oadota, Very
likely that will be the last heard of
the regulations until some notorious
hate reminds the authorities of the
rule.

Mrs. Newton, whose letter ia given
