Pockets containing $200 and
$300 are oontinually being, un
earthed in the Southern Oregon
mountains. Some by chance, but
nearly all as the result of the
pocket-hunters, oareful patient and
industrious labor.

WHY SHOULD BONDSMEN PAY?

"The proposed oatea of the state of
Oregon to oolleot about $30,000 on

the land board suggests that things
must be run in a very loose way by
the state government when a man
can get away with that amount of
money on a $5,000 bond. Some one
ought to be responsible besides the
state, but no one in all probability
will, exoept the bondsmen for the
$5,000, and they should step up like
men and pay without a suit."
Why should the Btate exaot the
loas inourred from a dishonest
offioial, or any part thereof, from
innooent bondsmen? The people
eleoted . Pennoyer, MoBrlde and
Metsohan respectively governor,
seoretary of state and state treasur
er. They, or the majority thereof,
appointed Geo W Davis olerk of the
school land board. He has proved
a defaulter, and now the state pro
poses to oolleot all it can from
bondsmen who lent theii names ax
aooomrrodationB. It ib radioally
wrong. The people chose their of
floials to represent them and should
stand the loss, not exact it from it
few bondsmen.
Farther regarding this matter of
bonds for publio officers: They
are seleoted by the people, either
direotly or indlreotly, and there is
no equity or jus tics in stripping a
few oitisens of their possessions
with which to compensate the state
for the dishonesty of an official
chosen by the people of the state.
And the bond does not make the
man honest. He can steal under
bonds as well as without them.
We do not believe with the Demo
crat that the bondsmen "should
step up like men and pay without
a suit." We say fight it and make
the loss fall where it ahould, on the
state.

here today from the Uold Hill district

the Hearing Uiinblet mine above Gold
Hill, This itjuke. tl6,000 taken iu all
from the rich pocket aluo it discovery
two weeks bko. The two miners oper
ating the Roaring Glmblet, believing
they have got all there la to be taken
from the ri b And, sold their claim
yesterday to Dr B 0 Ray for f 10,000,
$3000 down, the remainder to be made
in meutbly payments.
The history of the Roaring Glmblet
Is one continuous story of fabulous
pooket finds. . Several years ago a
pocket of $1000 was found on the sur
face of what was known as the Roar
ing Glmblet ledge. No further work
was done and (he claim was abandoned
until this spring, when two Germans
from California took possession. At a
depth of 86 feet of the tunnel sunk
they discovered the pocket two weeks
ago, at which time (10,000 was taken
out with pan and mortar in a few
days; several nuggeta weighing over
$50 being picked up.
The prospect has every appearance
of outrivaling the noted Uold Hill
pooket of twanty-flva years ago, from
which $160,000 was taken in a ooupls
of weeks.
