POSTING THE PARTY.
The Register has got the Line
county Republican party "united,''
or it thinks it has, through its
"plain talk editorials." It olosed
an editorial this morning with this
observation:
"We expect to frequently 'ob
serve' along these lines from now
until campaign times tor we believe
it is our duty to keep the party
posted on matters where the party
is not supposed to get a square
deal."
The voting in Lane oounty in
reoent elections very plainly bIiows
that the voter does not need to be
"posted" by anyone. He posts
himself and votes by ballot without
interference from anyone when the
day of elootion oomes about. This
independence in voting is shown by
the eleotion of men on either tiokjt
by majorities running up into the
hundreds. PoBt the voters all you
please and, just the same, they will
vote for whom they please. And it
is well, for the best interests of the
people.

Former President Gillman of

what he terms "an era of Carnegie
too muob reading." It is too true.
The mind can easily be crowded far
past its ability to retain and as
similate information, as easily as
the stomach can be made dyspeptio
by over-orowdiug with food. News
paper men, especially, realize this
faot and usually abstain from un
necessary reading. Much reading
dulls the mind.
An electrical engineer connected
with cotton mills at Shanghai,
China, Bays that the great mills
there with their cheap Chinese
labor are unable to compete with
American manufacturers. He de
clares that while the originators of
the plants expeoted to reap great
profits they have only realized
about three per cent on their invest'
ments. He says that the reason
why these mills cannot compete
with those of America is that an
American operative can do better
work and four times more in a
given time thin a Chinese.
