Balem, Feb 21. The senatorial sltua
lion still remains an enigma. There
are those who predict a change at any
ballot, and there are others that olalm
that no election can possibly be held.
In support of the first prediction the
following facts are ret fortb:
First The citizens of Oregon wish
to be represented by their full sena
torial delegation In coDgress, and will
Insist that some one be elected to fill
the vacanoy which will soon occur.
Becoud The republicans cannot at
the present time, aflord tbe luxury of
having their paity held responsible for
such an act, as It will strengthen the
opposition party at the next elsotion.
Again, It Is said that republican
principles must appeal In tbe end, to
the members of ibe minority wing, so
strongly, that they will return to tbe
fold and vote with the majority.
Those who believe that no eleotlon
will occur base their conclusions on
the facts that the demooratlo mem
bers have no need to help settle Re
publican quarrels, and that tbe Her
mann voters are pledged against Mr
Corbstt, and w III never help In securing
IiIb election. Corbel t's friends are
sworn to support him to the bitter end.
Right here It would be well to state
that a few of those who are now with
tbe opposition to Mr Corbett, are
really bis supporters and any day may
see them admitted to the ranks of tbe
Curbett voters.
PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
Exercises In Honor of Washing
ton's Birthday.
The tendency of the present man
agement of the Eugene publlo schools
is to Instill as much patriotism as pos
sible Into the minds of tbe school
ohildren, Accordingly every national
holiday that Is kept In memory of the
men who fought and died for their
oouutry Is appropriately observed by
them.
Tills afternoon appropriate exerolses,
celebrating the 1(19 h anniversary of
the birth of Qeorge .Washington were
held by the publlo schools, the exer
cises occurring at the Central and
Ueary bulldlugs. Nothing special
was had at the High Bchool on aooount
of the students belug rushed with tbel
work and having had no time to
prepare for the exerolses.
The programs at the two grammar
sohnoli consisted of sougs, recitations,
dialogues, etc, all of wbiob were in
keeping with the event in honor of
which the ejerdl.es were being ren
dered. The decorations were quite
pretty and show good taste on tbe
part of the children who did the work
and the teachers who superintended
it. Quite a number of visitors were in
attendance upon the exerolses aud
seemed much pleased with the manner
In which they were carried out.
Tomorrow the children will enjoy a
holiday aud no recitations will be bad
at either the grammar schools or the
High sioliool until Monday.

DEPARTMENT STORE.
An Explanation.
f Hbnati Chamber,
Balkm, Feb 19, Ml.
Editor Gcakd: In your Issue of
the 16th Inst I find the statement:
"Benator Kuykenall, of Lane county,
was tbe only one who vr ted with Ben
ator Hiulth for his licensed engineers'
bill." The statement is not correct.
Benator Kuykendall spoke and voted
against tbe bill, and was aotlve In Its
defeat.
Your statement does him a great In
justice. Truly yours,
R A Booth.
Tbe above item was, we think
dipped from one of the Balem papers,
and we are glad to publish a correc
tion of tbe same.
Tbe Guard has refrained from pub
lishing burtful items concerning tbe
cenlor senator from Lane couuty, even
bis agent coming personally to us In
one instanoe and begging us to with
hold further comment." We refer to
tbe occasion when he deliberately,
against tbe wishes of a mass meeting of
Lane county citizens assembled, voted
to surrender and give away a large body
of riob mineral and timber land with
out compensation. We bave withheld
the publication of tbe oolumn of mat.
tr published In the Oregonian in
whloh Benator Bmltb, of Poitland,
scorohed him so severely; we have not
commented, only Incidentally, to the
fact that be is opposed to all restriction
of Chinese and so voted.
Then tbe idea:
"His faithful work In aeouring an
Increase In the appropriation for the
Btate University from $30,000 to S47,
600 and tbe securing of an additionul
sum of fcJO.OCO for establishing at the
University a Hunt and beating plant,
against a heavy pressure and vigorous
opposition, are instances or nis em
oieut services as a legislator."
The bill increasing tbe appropriation
for tbe University from $30,000 to $47,
600 was introduced In tbe bouse by
that able champion of Lane county
Hon L T Harris, and carried through
tbat body of 60 members without i
dissenting voice. And now Kuyken
dell, and the Register, it appears
would like to rob L T Harris of tbe
honor. Again, Kuykendall did not
secure S3O.C00 for a healing plant. The
Item in tbe appropriation bill of $25,
000 was lotrcduoed by Mr Harris and
carried through tbe house by bim
without help from Mr Kuykendall
At tbe time tbe above was written
tbe senate bad not even passed the
bill through that bouse.
All during this session of tbe legis
lature it appears that Kuykendall baa
been claiming tbat be lB"Lanecounty"
and suob smsll fisb as Harris should
not exist.
His desire to put Harris "In a hole"
is proven by bis aotlon In the county
division bill, when be, Kuykendall
voted to defeat the measure with t
"surrender bill" In the senate. If
Lane oounty Is saved this territory, it
Is by tbe bard work, under extraorJi
narily unfavorable circumstances, ol
tbat friend of the people, Hon L T
Harris.
It Is a safe bet that John W Cochran
tbe Register's correspondent, Is a cor
poration employee although we do not
know blm and have never beard of
him before.
The Roglster's fight on Corbett lu
this county, is pronounced dis
honorable In the extreme by leading
republicans.
But we will say, never befriend or
apeak a good word for a known falsi
fler. He will stab you In tbe back at
the first opportunity.

"FAMOUS OREGON."
Looks Like Oregon Will Have
No Senator For Two Years.
THEN MONTANA HO".
neslslto theouard,
Balem, Feb 21. The change of Hem-
enwayaud McQueen to Corbett ye
terday, was made without causing the
slightest ripple of exciteuieut. The
r.t (1.1,1 Him tnemiiers were to be
Corbett supporters was generally
known, and no comment was neces
sary on the action taken. There my
be a consolidation of C irbett's oppos
ing factions and a man be named for
tbe place, yet this is only a possibility.
The probability is that no senator
will be elected, and two years bence
tbe famous Molilalia senatorial situa
tion may exist in "Famous Oregon."
Hard Comment.
Editor Gu.KD:-We find the fol
lowing libelous matter In today's
Register:
"Hemenway and McQueen switched
to fori t'. yesterday. Thus two Lane
county memoers have gone against the
wishes of their constituency. Hemen
way whs unwise enough to tell citizens
of Eugene before the legislature con
vened that he wai going to leave tbe
state after the leal-lature adjourned
aud locate lu BeallK It probably re
quired but little influence on the part
of tbe C irbett push to switch Hemen
way Into line. When it became known
Hemenway wis to leave Ihe stale the
geuerul opinion iirevailed that he
would naturally Wnd lu Corbett's
camp. As to McQ ieen, he will not
need to face bis constituency for be
will find practically none when be re
turns. McQueen is a dead duck poli'-
losliy."
How does the Register know these
men have Bold out aud gone against
the wishes of their constituency? Bucb
men in the republican party as A C
Woodcock, member slate republican
central committee; U R Chrisman,
chairman republican couuty commit
tee: B B Eakin. ex-senator and ex-
sherifl; S U Friendly, ex-mayor; Jobn
H McClung, ex-wnalor and ex-mayor;
James Hofimau, A G Hovey, Chris
Hardy, H W Thompson, Darwin
Bristow, E U Lee, county clerk; L H
Johnson, secretary of republican
county committee, aud a isre uumber
nf other republicans, a msjority, I
think, endorse the action of Represen
tatives MiQieen and Hemenway in
supporting A i Corbett, as they be
lleve Ibht the majority of the votn j of
Lane county are not lu favor of the
McBrlde, Williams, Hermann, Kuy
kendsy crowd.
"McQueen Is a dead duck poll'ical
ly." Caesar Kuykeudail may be the
dead duck, Mr Register. Lookout.
