"High Sohool Student" writes tbe
Guabd asking oar opinion as to tbe
most sublime sentence in tbe
English language. It is found in
the first chapter of Genesis: "And
God said, 'Let there be light:' and
there was light." For vastness of
effect and sublimity of conception
these few words have no equal in
any literature.
A traveling man up in Pasco,
Wasbincton, deserves the medal
for being the possessor of complete
presence of mind. When ordered
to throw up bis bunds by a high
wayman, a wad of bills came out ot
bis pocket in the palm of his hand.
The highwayman only got some
looBe ohange from the pocket.
Hftlem Independent: "Since the
election of Mi McKinley wheat and

so soon alter tbe 'overwhelming

When Emperor William was
approached by the census enumer

tbe blank giving his occupation
as "German Emperor and king of

MONDAY - DECEMBER 10
THE OCEAN SUBSIDY GIFT.
President J J Hill of the Great
Northern Railway is a level beaded
and successful business man, and
has business ideas. Referring to
the ship subsidy bill, intended to
open the treasury for the benefit of
a few favorites, President Hill is
quoted as saying:
"No doubt some of my friends
thought they were serving me and,
in a money Bense, perhaps they
were, but I would rather see them
take the duty off tbe plates tbat are
to go into the Bbips when they are
built, If Congress will appropriate
$180,000,000 for a class of ships
that will reduoe the oost of carrying
our commerce, we will have a riplit
to feel tbat tbey have done well,
but we don't think that tbey should
give the bulk of it to 20 or 21 ship?
that are only compelled to run 21
knots onoe to the satisfaction ol a
government officer detailed for
that purpose."
President Hill's railroad has a
line of steamers running across the
Paoiflo, and will Bhare tbe govern
ment benefaction. He knows that
the subsidy Is not needed and is
a simple gift to rloh corporations
that would run the boats, subsidy
or no Bubsidy.
London haB an underground
railroad. Although it is fifty feet
below the surface oitizens oomplain
tbat it shakes houses rattles, win
dows, and even awakens sleepers.
London must be built on very un
substantial earth.
Roseburg Review: ''There is
much speculation around the court
liouse regarding the appointment
of Judge Lyons' successor, and all
the officials there are outspoken in
their regret over the judges' aotion.
They feel that the oounty has lost
the servioes of one of the ablest
men that was ever at the head of
its affairs. Some say tbat the dem
ocrats should be given the plaoe by
the governor, but no demoorat has
yet oome forward and put in bis
claim to the place. Among the
republicans mentioned are: 1) S K
Buick, John U Shupe, John W
Wright, of this oity; Commissioner
M D Thompson, of Scottsburg; W
A Perkins and K Roy Applegate, of
Drain; ex-Judge A F Stearns, of
Oakland, and probably a score or
more besides. ,It is not known that
any of those mentioned aro active
candidates,- but it is supposed that
there will be a lively tussle over
the appointment before it is made.
The offloe pays 1,U00 a yoar."
A new bit of Washington gossip
tells how one day last winter Sena
tor Chandler, ot New Hampshire,
being about to enter the Senate
chamber from the public corridor,
was accosted by one of two little
girls, who had wandered in there.
"Mister, what does it oost to go in
there?" said tbe oblld. At that
moment Chandler saw Clark,
the Montana millionaire, coining
around the oorner. "Ask tbat
man," said the New Hampshire.
"He knows all about It."
The powers bad an easy time
overcoming any opposition found
in China, Now they are in the
serious predicament of not being
able to find any responsible govern'
ment to treat with.
