There is prospeot of the early
relief of the motive power famine
on the linas of the Southern Paoifio
Railroad Company, for aome of
the new engine as well ea other
rolling stojk have begun to arrive
at Sacramento and Oakland from
the east. Already No. 1109 has
arrived and been put in aotive
servioe, and others are expeoted
from time to time until in all 28
new engines will have been re
ceived. No. 1109 ie equipped for
burning oil and has been placed on
the ron south of Saoramento. As
these new engines arrive those now
in use below will be sent north
where they are bo badly needed.
It ie not likely that the three
desperadoes who walked off with
nearly 15000 of gold and silver, the
other evening, intended for the
monthly payday of employes of the
Western Lumber Company at
Portland will be oaught. Such a
well- planned, nervy robbery oould
only have been made by sharp,
shrewd men. Gold and silver oan
not be identified, and it "is not
probable that men who worked
so swiftly and effectively in the face
of danger of oatory and pursuit will
permit any clue as to their indent!
ty to fall into the hands of the
police. . .

THE WAR BETWIXT MAN AND
BEAST.
From India there comes once more
the official figures relating to the
"casualities" caused in the con
stant war whloh prevails there
between man and beast, says Cham
hers' Journal. We are happily
situated in this oountrv in being
able to look back upon such a
struggle as a thing of the past; but
in India destructive animals still
olaim their annual tribute ol
human blood.
In the past yeir more than 120,
000 animals were killed, and re
wards olaimed for their slaughter;
and during the same period 25.1GG
men, women and ohildren met the t
death through tooth, olaw and th
poison of snakes. . To this terribli
tale of human Buffering must b
added nearly 100,000 domesti
animals whioh were killed by tbi
same agenoieB. We thus see tha
the loss of life is about equal oi
both sides. It is interesting to set
how the deaths are apportioned
among the wild beaeta. Firs)
comes the terrible man-eating tiger,
whloh is responsible ior 927 vic
tims; the wolves oome next, with a
total of 4G2, while the leopard
claims 894. Under the heading
"Other Wild Beasts" are computed
1,482 human deathB. ' The rest of
the grand total, no fewer than 21,
900 items of "this terrible death list,
are set down to snake bite.
It is almost futile to expect any
great reduotion in the annual Iobb
of life from poisonous Bnakea, for
the natives will never kill one of
these oreatures if they oan avoid
doing bo.
A boy at Sweet Home, Linn
oounty, during religious service
threw a chew of tobaooo at the
minister, hitting him in tha faoe.
He was promptly arrested and
' fined $15 and cost. We do not
believe in oorporal punishment as
a rule, but if this boy is not over
a hundred years old a good dose of
hiokory would have fit the oase
better.
A boari of engineers have just
sent an estimate of damages lo
government works by the Galves
ton hurrioane last summer. The
board says 11,500,000 will be re
quired to repair the j'lties at Gal
veston, and $992,000 fur fortifica
tion. Lou of life is estimated at
6000. '
A Moving Record.
A fairly aged couple living In an
up-country district of Lane oounty
are certainly entitled to the worlu't
record for "movers." They were
married when 18 years of age and are
now 60. They nave moved 47 times.
Were married tu Iowa, moved to
Michigan, baok to Iowa, to Missouri,
back to Iowa, to California than to
Oregon where they now reside.
Tbey moved aa ujauy as 18 times in
one state, California. If any of our
readers can equal this moving business
our columns are open to tbem.
